I know you got new tubes. But this speaker is fan-fing-tastic

      Re: Smoothest speaker

Just gotta ask... Did you bias the power tubes? In my JCA20H, that made more of a difference than actually putting in new tubes. And the stock tubes came pretty badly mismatched and cold.

No I didn't bias. I am not messing with amp guts. One reason I got this amp was that I would have to bias the tubes. Supposed to be plug an a play. I know I can bias them but...,

The new tubes sound a lot better.

          Re: Smoothest speaker

I would never ever ever EVER suggest Tungsol preamp tubes to somebody aiming for smoother sounds.
In my experience they're very tight and inmediate. I'd suggest some Mullard RIs definitely, maybe some JJs even?

EDIT: Just read that you bought them and that they worked. Well, can't argue with facts.

Diego from reviews I would not have thought so. I tried JJs first did not like them in this amp (do in my marshall). I emailed Doug at Dougstubes.com and hr suggested them. The stock preamps were real grainy harsh and thin compared to the tung sol. I'm sure the power tube change helped a lot there too.

If you change your mind, I'll leave this as reference.

Also, I don't know who told you that they were plug and play, but the only time that is true is if they have the same rating as the set they are replacing. In this case, I don't think you or anyone else knows the rating of the stock tubes, so they should probably be biased. But since EL84s are so cheap, it's probably not that big of a deal if they sound good.

Is the cabinet back glued on the JC12S? I've got all the screws out and can't pull it off. I have a Celestion 70/80 from an old combo laying around to swap, but can't seem to open it up.

Its not super efficient either, so it will give you some slight attenuation. It also fattens up the low end and smooths off the tops to give you a very ballsy overdriven tone. Its agressive, but not too hard edged like a swamp thing, vintage voiced but with plenty of muscle.
Good info. I've got it down to either of those two for my iso-cab. The Texas Heat is less money but handles 3x the power.

I pried with a butter knife. It's not glued.

I had the same problem. I just kept at it and eventually it came off.

After tons of speakers, nothing sounds thicker, smoother, more chewy than my Celestion V30 Hellatone 60s with my amps.
