Re: Stupid question bout 5way selector?

1 - neck
2 - neck & mid
3 - mid
4 - mid & bridge
5 - bridge

at least that's normal strat wiring

Re: Stupid question bout 5way selector?

I'm going to install one in my James Burton Tele and use it a little differantly than normal. If I install a neck humbucker I'll wire it:

1. full neck humbucker
2. full neck humbucker & bridge single coil
3. bridge single coil
4. split neck humbucker & bridge single coil
5. split neck humbucker

If I install the Duncan Custom Shop Tapped Hot Tele bridge pickup instead, I'll wire it:

1. 10K bridge pickup
2. 10K bridge pickup & neck single coil
3. neck single coil
4. 6.5K coil tap bridge pickup & neck single coil
5. 6.5K coil tap bridge pickup

Lew what is the difference between splitting a hum and coil tapping it? Do they sound any different?

Re: Stupid question bout 5way selector?

A humbucker is dual coils: two coils side by side. When you split it you ground out one coil and only the remaining coil is functioning.

A Tapped Hot tele Pickup is a 10K pickup with a second wire coming out of the middle of the coil at about 6.5K of the winding. So you have two hot leads: one 6.5K and one 10K. But there's only ONE coil....not two. You just decide whether you want the full output (10K for soloing) or 6.5K for chords or for combining with the neck pickup for a chimier tone than you'd get if you combined the full 10K output with the neck pickup.

Yeah but in a hum you can get a coil tap cant you and is this the same thing as a coil split. Is it the same sound?

No...a single coil with a coil tap and humbucker with the coils split are two differant things. Maybe reread my post. :) Or better still, go to the Duncan Faq page and find Seymour's explanation. :) Lew

Re: Stupid question bout 5way selector?

To answer your question, it will produce a similar result (lower output and a thinner, more biting sound), however the process is completely different. You can think of a humbucker as two pickups, wired in series. Splitting the coils is when you only run one of those pickups.

A single-coil pickup, on the other hand, cannot be reduced any farther, so you lower the output and increase the treble by shortening the coil. That is what is meant by a coil tap.

BTW, I've never heard of a humbucker set up to actually tap the coils--correct me if I'm wrong?

Wise man, he say "there are no stupid questions. However, there are lots of inquisitive idiots"

Only kidding, I've been waiting ages to use that one ;)

The only truly stupid questions are the ones that never get asked for fear of sounding stupid.
