  • Seriously, I hear ya. Son los jodios independentistas jeje! It would be great if it was though. It would just make lots of stuff easier, and it would benefit PR a lot more than some people think. I really doubt it will ever happen though. Oh well, guess we can dream eh?
For sure. I'd really love to go back. Such a beautiful place, and you just gotta love the ambiente latino. Unfortunately its just way too expensive to live there (even more so since they added a local tax), and tickets from TX are just so effin expensive. Someday I will though lol.
Yeah man lots of them are. I can't keep track of which ones still go to Rio Piedras though lol. Are you studying music there? If you are you might know Raymond Maldonado? Knowing him he's probably involved in something majorly lol. But yeah I had a cool little group of friends when I lived their that were all a into guitars and stuff.
Dude I was born there too (although my family is Dominican). What University do you go to there? La upi? Almost all of my friends from high school still live there, and most of them either go to la inter or rio piedras. Sadly I never get to go back to see them.

I was not suggesting that your bassist borrows your Squier P Bass. I was trying to get a feel for how good/bad/indifferent the Epiphone's Asian pickups might be.

Another consideration with the 'Bird bass is its neck profile and dimensions. Some players struggle with the bulk and string spacing of a Precision. I would expect the Epi neck to be skinnier at the nut.

IMO, if your bassist could afford one hundred Dollars for one American replacement soapbar bass pickup, it would make a world of difference to his and the band's sound. With a new PU in the bridge position, he could think of his bass like a Stingray. With the new PU in the neck position, he could think of it as a Precision on steroids.

You are correct to assert that most of the action is in the midrange that your bassist insists on scooping out. Cruddy strings and indifferent pickups cannot help either.

Er, how do your basses sound through his amp?

The way I see it, the Alder/Maple/Rosewood Epi is not far short of the Fender recipe anyway. I have an instrument of similar spec to the Squier VM series Jazz except with Bartolini 8S and 9J-1L#1 PJ pickups. It sounds huge and "bouncy". If Bartolini offers an 8S or 8SU model in a soapbar housing, I'd put one of those in the neck position of the Epi and stand well back. :D

Visit www.gibson.com. Compare and contrast the specs of the Gibson and Epiphone Thunderbirds. Everything in the description of the pickups on the US model screams Bartolini. The Alder body and screwed-on maple neck of the Epi screams Fender. (Have you guessed where this is leading?)

Measure the pickup routs of the Epiphone. Visit www.bartolini.net. Somewhere amongst the section on pickups for four string bass there must be a dual-coil soapbar model that fits the Epi routs.

Alternatively, consider EMG. Some models feature a Fender-style pickup inside a Soapbar housing. Others mimic the Musicman Stingray pickup. Hence, numerous PJ, JJ, MM/J, HB/J permutations arise.

Right now, your bassist has the opportunity to select how his instrument will sound whilst retaining the T Bird looks and feel. Realising that college guys are not wallowing in disposable income, I suggest that just one pickup is purchased.

SECOND ATTEMPT AT SENDING THESE TWO MESSAGES!!!

Seems as if you have already nailed the problem. Your bassist is failing in his duty to play for the team rather than for his own gratification.

My idea of how a Thunderbird should sound is a cross between Adam Clayton (U2), Michael Anthony (Van Halen, Chickenfoot) and Pete Way (UFO). A deep throb coupled with a raspy, guitar-like upper end. When you get this sound right, guitar/bass/drums/vocals is enough. Shoot! I just described Dusty Hill. (The other exemplar is John Entwistle's pickstyle Precision Bass on The 'Oo, "Live At Leeds". )

Just clicked the hyperlink and I'm immediately worried. Notice how the product description tells you much about the cabinet SHAPE and nothing about the MATERIALS from which it has been built. IMO, always a bad sign.

Whenever an amp cabinet manufacturer's brochure does not boast marine birch ply or solid hardwood construction (some even insist on waxing lyrical about their corner joints and reinforcement bracing), the cabinet does not have these features.

e.g. The Marshall BassState range had some designs based on the same principles as the DBS but assembled using cheaper materials. RESULT- the amp lacks dynamics and the cabinet rattles at high sound pressure levels. Unprofessional.

Setting the EQ sliders into smiley face shape implies either ignorance, being a fan of Metallica (and their legendary "secret" MESA/Boogie graphic EQ scoop settings), that the pickups of the Epi bass are mid-heavy or, possibly, simply a liking for smiley faces.

If you want my opinion on your bassist's gear, you will have to list it for me. Also, what playing style? Plectrum, fingers/thumb, mixture of both?

Hi. My Marshall DBS rig is the 7400 head, a 7210 cab and a 7115 cab. I also have the 7410 cab but I rarely use that now. The 2x10, 1x15 combination gives a wider overall frequency response.

Describing the tone in words is difficult. I like a full range. I want the hear some of the roundwound string wraps. I want to feel the impact of low end. Then, of couse, I want my Stingrays to sound EBMM and my Fenders to sound Fender. (My Roland Cube 100 Bass COSM combo sometimes struggles to achieve this!)

The thing that most makes me appreciate how good the Marshall DBS is is when I have to play through any other amplification. Some larger Trace Elliot rigs are of equivalent quality but, of course, there is a good reason for this! ;)

The main sound that the Marshall DBS rig produces is the moaning and groaning from me after I have loaded it into a vehicle. I am nearly fifty!!! :D

Sorry about sig-ing your "Aceman ... head ... enlighten" line but it was irresistable. Don't worry. I shall remove the sig in a few days.
