$1000 average run-of-the-mill Mexican Stratocasters how did we get to this point ?

So you are saying the first time you heard Pour Some Sugar On Me, you thought it was Tom Scholz?
Nope im saying first time i heard ZZ top w/a Rockman i knew it was a Rockman. Same with Def Lep & Parts of Dokken ULAK.
Tom Scholz had different era's of guitar gear and so did Barry Goudreau. The Rockman device didn't come out til after the first 2 Boston Albums.
Plus you are trying to equate a face to a song or something.
Boston used Marshall Super Lead Stacks with power soaks to get that thick saturated sound and the "power Soak" was SR & D's first product marketed.
Rockmans didn't come out til later.
And Keyboards are part of Scholz too, Hammond B-3's to be exact.
I can pickout a Rockman a mile away and they are cool for what they are but i much prefer a 100 watt Marshall.
Def Leppard did alot of mixing on their Hysteria / Rockmans with the majic of Mutt Lang.
So when folks say they used a "Rockman" yeah but thats not all.
Joe Satriani used RM on Surfing with the Alien also. Alot of folks did.
That doesn't mean thats the "Satriani sound" or i see Joe's face everytime i hear a Rockman.

Bottom line:
Corporations/manufacturers charge what the majority of buyers are willing to pay for an item. If nobody bought the $1000 MIM Strat, mfrs would either lower the price or discontinue it (they aren't going to continue making an item that doesn't sell...if they want to stay in business).

I'm pretty sure stepping on the distortion box makes a bigger difference than who is playing the guitar.

in what? a good player can play regardless of the equipment or tone, usually play better when they are happy with both those things. distortion can only cover up so much of a bad players mess

Or - like Gibson, you would wood-chip them, because, Gibson.

So, an album, that was one of the most excessively produced in the history of music, that had a vid by Phil Collen that shocked most players that it was a Rockman, was identified immediately by you instantly.

I find it hard to believe that you are not in demand for studio production work in the booth with such amazing ears...
