Re: 12" with the most articulate bass in an open-back combo ?

Yep. The 55 Hz Weber British cone is awesome. I have one of these in a 2x12 along with a Weber Silver Bell. Back around 1979 I bought a pair of Celestion G12H speakers with the 55 Hz cones and loved them. I had blown both of the Greenbacks in my 50 watt Marshall Mk II combo, and these G12H-55 Hz speakers sounded HUGE compared to the Greenbacks. I never blew them either. The Weber 1230-55 is pretty much exactly how I remember these old Celestions.

So... Good choice.

What cabs did the G12H ship in as original equipment?

I'd still say the EVM-12L is the tightest/most composed speaker ever, in a open back 1x12. From top to bottom, they can take the rapid transient punch of a quartet of 6550's. NEVER FARTS!

It was used in the heavy duty Marshall 4x12's (Model number 1982) from 1967 up to about 1980 or so. The standard Marshall 4x12 (Model number 1960)used the G12M25 during that time frame. The G12H was used quite a bit in combo amps during the late 60's and 70's too. You could also find them in several other brands of British amps and amp cabs during that time frame.

There were versions with 55hz cones originally intended for bass applications but still got used quite a bit for lead guitar. 75hz cones versions were more commonlly used for lead.

Great info Lake Placid Blues-thanks for that.

And so as to not hijack, I have to tell the OP that I use Swamp Things with my Fenders and they sound clean with LOTS of bass, almost too much for my tastes. I'm really interested in the G12 myself and am wondering if the Webers are close enough to the originals to just avoid the big $ that go with getting the English Celestion reissues. If not, I'd be willing to shell out for the reissues, but they seem a little excessive in cost.

Hi All,

Which speaker would have the best articulation of low frequencies in an open-back 1x12 combo?

It's not all about low frequency articulation, so I want a speaker with a nice top end too.

The one that fills most closely your description is the Eminence Cannabis Rex.

Don't mind the little bit "longish" break-in period, as it sounds excellent from the get go; it just keeps getting better with time. Its transients are second to none.

HTH,
