I had done a gorgeous job on the finish of my Warmoth LP. It's a metallic blue with a layer of polyurethane polished to a beautiful gloss ... until this afternoon.
It was finally time to install the bridge. I installed the tuners this morning, and that went fabulously, so I was feeling pretty good about everything. I started by masking around the TOM/STP post holes to protect the finish (oh the irony ...). Next, I pressed the mounting bracket into the hole to set it into place. I put a folded up piece of flannel on top of the bracket to protect it, then hammered it into the body. Once it was flush with the body, I screwed the stud in, and it fit perfectly. Joy!
That's when I decided to remove the masking tape I put on at the beginning. Disaster!!! The glossy topcoat of poly peeled right off the base coat as I pulled up the tape! I was horrified. So much work ruined!
So now I have an ugly patch of bare paint on the top of this lovely guitar. I am hoping I can just spray fresh poly right over top of it and pray it blends well with the rest. I know one thing - I'm definitely driving the rest of the bridge studs in before I put more poly on. I don't want to repeat this disaster!
(sigh) Wish me luck.
