#@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

I had done a gorgeous job on the finish of my Warmoth LP. It's a metallic blue with a layer of polyurethane polished to a beautiful gloss ... until this afternoon.

It was finally time to install the bridge. I installed the tuners this morning, and that went fabulously, so I was feeling pretty good about everything. I started by masking around the TOM/STP post holes to protect the finish (oh the irony ...). Next, I pressed the mounting bracket into the hole to set it into place. I put a folded up piece of flannel on top of the bracket to protect it, then hammered it into the body. Once it was flush with the body, I screwed the stud in, and it fit perfectly. Joy!

That's when I decided to remove the masking tape I put on at the beginning. Disaster!!! The glossy topcoat of poly peeled right off the base coat as I pulled up the tape! I was horrified. So much work ruined!

So now I have an ugly patch of bare paint on the top of this lovely guitar. I am hoping I can just spray fresh poly right over top of it and pray it blends well with the rest. I know one thing - I'm definitely driving the rest of the bridge studs in before I put more poly on. I don't want to repeat this disaster!

(sigh) Wish me luck.

This is what you get from purchasing from Warmoth!

Let the buyer beware!

I think he said he finished it himself... am I right? Good luck on the repair job, anyhow.

Wow, thanks for this very helpful comment!

Finish was done by me. Warmoth did a fantastic job on the body and neck actually.

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

went the krylon route?

i'm sorry to hear that you're another one of the rattlecan victims dude.

good luck with the repair job.

someone on the JCF recomended a diferent top clear.. which is a 2 compound one. it has a hardener in it and he said it was rock solid and hardened very fast.
cant find the thread in question though. sorry

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

yeah dude dont pay attention to idiots with silly posts.

cool that you did a good job on the finish.

my experience with finishing is that it takes a while for it to dry real well.

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

Oh ****e! Major suckage...

I feel your pain :yell: and really hope it blends when you spray a fresh layer over!

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

well, it should once he sands it down and buffs it out. if it's only the clear coat, it shouldnt be noticeable.

just mask the bridge post first :p

He quite clearly stated he did the finish himself. Grind your axe elsewhere

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

Next time, try using painters tape instead of general purpose masking tape. The glue is designed to help prevent that. Good luck with the repair

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

I made a homemade strat body out of poplar and used automotive spray cans to do a thin finnish on it... after finnishing it 3 years ago i had hung it up to dry for 6-8 weeks.... then i decided to let sit for a while before doing anymore work.... ended up sitting in my closet for 3 years now and i have finnaly started to install a neck and hardware.... I came across some cheaper squier parts to put on it. the finnish peels like an orange still...

I was experimenting seeing if i could do some thin coats (ala EVH spray can job... except no strips, just a gold finnish).... We have all heard how thin finnishes are sopposed to sound great so i tried my best to make it look right and yet have a thin finnish... I used Auto Primer coats on the bare wood, followed by some auto body spot puddy to fill in some router bit tear outs on the edges... Then a few coats of colour... followed by some clear....

The spray can stuff i used seems to be so thin of solids it is not that good.... I was thinking of going to the auto supply store and buy some cans of good paint with a higher solids to it and use my compressor and spray gun set up.... add a few coats of a better paint on top to help seal it in and maybe the top layers will harden better... Again just experimenting.

This same thing happened to me awhile back. The reason it happened to me though is Cause I forgot (actually didn't know I needed to at teh time) To sand between the color coats, and the clear coats. Everything was fine forawhile, but then one day I noticed a little peeling at the edge of the body on the back. And Within the next week The Entire Back layer of clear coat came off, In a Single Sheet! It was kinda amazing really.
But if you didn't sand between the color coats and the clear coats, That same exact thing May end up happeneing to you. and if thats the Case I'de suggest trying to wait a bit, and then use that same tape to "peel" off ALL of the clear coat (if it will all come off easily) and Then just do a light sanding on the color coat. Then Put on the clear coats, they'll stick alot better that way.
What kinda paints did you use anyways? Hopefully the same brand for the clear and the color coats.

Thanks. I'm using 3M automotive grade masking tape. It's designed for finishes like this, but since it's going on wood instead of steel who knows?

So far the repair is going well. I've done two coats, and it's still pretty clear where the damage is. I suspect I will need to put a lot more on before it starts to look proper. I will also do a bit of wet sanding every 3 coats or so to help even out the seam.

I'll let you guys know the results. Worst case scenario, I have to sand the whole top and re-do the base coat as well. I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that.

Re: #@$@#$!14%$%!~~!!!! Poly peeled off my Warmoth!

Any pics of the damage? I've found that if you want certain colors that you cant find through Stew Mac, or ReRanch that Testors spray enamel works great. I'm not sure how things will go up north, but down here, it's so hot that the finish can cure completely in just a few days. Just recently I refinished a strat using their "black pearl" and it came out awesome. I used 3 cans (about 8 bucks) for a good finish. Wetsanded with 800, then used their clear enamel (5 cans). Wetsanded with 1000 after each coat, then 800, 1000, and then 1500 on the final coat, followed by some compounds. It's shinier than a new Corvette (and way cheaper too)

I would suggest that it's technically his fault. He finished the guitar. There are sometimes things better left to a pro to do.
