18v Mod on EMG X Series?

I'm thinking of putting a set of 81x/60x in a guitar as I've never tried active before and I've heard that the 18v Mod improves the sound of the normal 81/60 and makes them sound like the x series but what would happen if you 18v modded the x series. Would it make them sound better as well or would it not do much?

Good question. I haven't been into EMGs for awhile, but I remember running them at 18v sounded like crap. Totally killed the aggressive aspect and everything I liked about them. But that's been a long time ago, and my ears have admittedly evolved quite a bit.

I say try it. It'll only cost a few bucks and is easily reversible.

Do the pickups require a battery each or can a set run off 1 battery? (I'm really new to Actives)

1) A set can run off two batteries no problem.

2) The 18v mod on a standard EMG 81 increases the pickup's headroom - either you'll like it, hate it, or simply not care due to personal preference.

3) The 18v mod is not recommended for the x series. The 81x is meant to sound like an 81 with more headroom, but at 9v - making the 18v mod unnecessary. This is achieved by simply changing two resistor values on the preamp, making the 81x preamp -6dB from the normal 81 to reduce clipping. The output impedance is also at a lower 2K rather than 10K. I guess it may be worth trying, but I wouldn't expect it to sound great if you're looking for the EMG 81 sound.
