1963 Fender Strat neck

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

Whatever it is, someone out there will pay something for it, which is better than nothing. Hopefully it will be a user who simply wants to get an old axe back to original specs after doing some repairs on the neck.

If it was a few years older, I'd be very interested, as I can just do most of the repair work in my garage. I have a '59 Strat that no longer has it's original neck. Some day I hope to find an early '59 maple neck to put on it, as it is an oddball 9-hole transitional model, so it could feasibly have had an all maple neck originally. And I have always known it as a maple-necked guitar, for at least 25 years. But I'd settle for a '59 rosewood slab board if the timing and the price were right.

It looks legit to me, I just worked on a friends original 65 Jazzmaster and the construction and markings look legit

No collector value, this thing was butchered. Needs a major luthier job to be playable and after that its only a players thing. Maybe 500 bucks IMHO

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

So, I have an update for everyone. I wanted to wait for everything to go through before I posted this.

I posted the neck on ebay with all of the pictures I posted here, along with a couple more of the side of the neck to show the frets. I posted the pictures at a higher resolution as well.

I tried to be factual and not sell it (thanks ItsaBass) and mentioned all of the things I could find while keeping it objective.

My buddy and I figured we would list it for $1500 with a Best Offer option. He didn't want to consider anything below a certain value, otherwise he would just keep it and try to make the repairs himself.

It sold for $1500 the next morning.

Our only guess is that it's someone that saw the value in it, even with the work to be done. I mean, you can replace the hardware, refret it, but the wood is the valuable part.

I did have a bit of an issue with the buyer. They were unhappy with a few things, but it was all clearly stated in the listing and I offered a refund if they weren't happy. Instead they asked for $100 knocked off. My buddy agreed.

So, $1400 for the neck.

Anyhow, the payment's gone through and the buyer is happy. Just thought I'd share and complete the thread, so to speak, since a lot of you contributed your thoughts and time.

Thanks to all!

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

guess i should pull out that '62 jazzmaster neck rotting in my basement and throw it on the bay!

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

i kind of have a thing for roundlam Fender necks... (thats what attracted me to a 66 reissue from the Custom Shop...) but ya with the thin rosewood i imagine it becomes a ***** to refret when they get really old like that!

glad you sold it... if i had it given to me i more then likely would of tried to refret it and fix the scratchs on the board at the same time... who knows what type of trouble i could of been in LOL

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

A fool and his money etc.

For a collector, there are far better examples of a '63 Strat neck out there that haven't been modded and mistreated.

For a player, this is a abused-to-hell piece of crap. You'd be WAY better off getting a Warmoth.

Re: 1963 Fender Strat neck

a friend of my dad had a 63 tele that was in pieces... he bought in the 70's and never learned to play, end up loaning it to a guy who painted it white with some crappy paint... when he went to get his guitar back years later he was freakin about the paint and told the guy to get the paint off his guitar and return it to him like he had loaned it to him in the firtst place...

so what does the guy do... strips the hareware off and reaches for a belt sander!!!! it was F'ed.... my dads friend got it back in pieces and all messed up... it sat in his basement for 20 years and he sold it for $3400 "as" is a few years ago... the store that bought it planned the body flat again, round the edges again, resprayed the body and neck... sold it as a refinished 63 tele for over $6000!!!
