1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

Excluding the rewinds...Anyone know for a fact what the first Model Seymour Duncan humbucker was named?

The first products were tele pickguards and tele brass bridges and knobs.

The first pups marketed were strat, tele, duosonics pbass and jbass pups..in 76/77..before that SD was only doing rewinds.

The first hums were..
59 Which was originally model made after Jeff Beck's 59 Les Paul pup.?
JB and JM which were rewinds made from Lonnie Mack's V.?
78 which was a rename of the first Van Halen model in 1978?

These hums may have been the first 3 marketed at the same time, correct?

Or something else?

I believe SH1-59 is the first HB. JB and JAZZ came along later and then 78.

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

1978 was the year the company was founded. Before then he was just doing rewinding services.

1978 was also the year they began marketing their own Humbuckers..before that in 76/77 they only marketed Strat tele duosonics and J and P bass pups.

Before 76/77 it was rewinds only.

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

"The '78 Model pickup is a faithful recreation of the legendary low-output, Alnico 2, P.A.F.-style humbucker that Seymour designed in 1978 for various high-profile artists he was working with at the time. This pickup should not be associated with any specific artist. The traditional '78 Model comes with single conductor braided shield cable and a bottom plate with long mounting legs. However, since it's built-to-order, it can also be ordered in Trembucker spacing with four conductor cable and short legs. Either way, it's available with double-black, white or zebra (black and cream) bobbins. Recommended for bridge position. Also available in calibrated neck and bridge sets for $300."

Possibly it was the first EVH model...as well...but could not be marketed as such!
So today it is called the 78

Interesting no '78 anywhere nor any EVH aside from a custom custom!

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

That's because those are the standard production line pickup models available through any dealer off the shelf (if they so chose to stock them). The EVH/78 is and always has been a custom order, now a Custom Shop option.

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

The catalogues represent production model pickups. The description of the '78 indicates it was made for certain artists, meaning it was custom shop.

I never heard of the '78 pickup until just a few years ago. For a while it was called the EVH, then Evenly Voice Harmonics, then EVH due to possible trademark issues with Van Halen.

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

So, with no advertisement to the public, how would even the HP artist know that this pup even existed or what to order and why in the world would it not be offered in catalogs in any manner or means?

How would anyone in the public now to call it the EVH or the 78 if it is not mentioned in the early catalogs?

If the HP artists wanted it, would the General Public not want them that much more if it had such a reputation?
Would it not be a best seller in 78 with such a "high profile artist" reputation?

When did the EVH before the name change to 78 start appearing in Catalogs?

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

Wild; I was going to search for this article, and thought it would take a lot longer than the five seconds it took. (First return, as well.) Enjoy!

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

Dude look at the old mags and endorsement stuff. Ed was always secretive about his gear. That's why It was never marketed. It was made and essentially kept secret. Our perception of reality today is not reality from 32 years ago. Forums didn't exist and the aftermarket parts business was fledgling at best.

You're using information available to you today assuming it was available in the past and digging for a skeleton that just doesn't exist.

Bro, he can't hear you...if he could hear you, or me or half the guys on this forum he'd stop asking the same questions over and over and over and over and over and over again.

However, trying to tell this guy something is much like trying to talk to a tree...talk all you want, he ain't gonna hear you.

I have given up on him and this is the last time I will post in any of his, MANY threads about EVH the man or the pickup...

One last note...can we ban a guy for being a hard headed fool??

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

Hey guys, remember, stick to The Code: like we all agreed, make sure that none of us veteran forum bros lets on about our secret stash of authentic wound-in-1978 EVH Model pickups that we've been hoarding and completely erased any reference to!!

Oh, wait......crap!!!

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

It's easy how it became known......word of mouth. I knew about the Evenly Voiced Harmonics back in the early 1990's. Word of mouth and ads in guitar mags and catalogs at guitar shops is how things became know back before the internet. ;)

Re: 1st Seymour Duncan Humbucker?

Yeah, That pup starting in 78 would have been a best seller...
It could have been marketed as Eruption 78, back then....or whatever...
Both the JB and the 78 EVH were Gibson PAF rewinds..
What were the differences...number of winds? and wire used?
