1x12 cab w/ a marshall head?

Do you guys think a 1x12 cab with a marshall head combination would work? Cause I'm thinking about getting a head, so I could just get a half stack, when I'm ready to perform. But for now I can use the 1x12 for just practicing.

Tell me what you guys think about this idea.

Not a problem whatsoever. Would be great probably. I was thinking of getting 1x12 Bogner for practicing and recording purposed.

Yes, it would work if the 12" was fairly high-powered, like an EVM-12L, or one of the Weber EV or JBL clones (the California and Michigan; I can never remember which is which). If it's a 50-watt head, you could get away with one of the higher-powered Celestions. The G12H80 ($42 on closeout from Avatar) comes to mind, or the older G12M-65 or -70 are cheap on eBay (I have one laying around that I got for $15, but I had to patch a small hole).

Something else to consider would be a Marshall combo. I used to love my 4010 combo - 1-12" with a JCM800 2204 50-watt head. Then add another cabinet (1, 2 or 4 x12") when you need it. 1-12 combos rock, and are easy to haul to practice.

I was thinking about getting this cab on e-bay.

So with the combo thing Rich are you talking about plugging the speaker on the combo to the amp head.

if you are using a 100w head, then you need a speaker that can handle 100w or more, basecly. i run my 5150 and my custom made head through my Marshall avt150's built in 100w 1x12 celestion and it works fine, i just make sure not to turn it up too much with the 5150 being 120w.

As far as I know the 1912 comes with one 150W Celestion. It willl easily swallow everything that a 100W head can throw into its throat. Anyway, you will have some placing problems because a Marshall head is almost twice as wide as a 1912

For practice it is the BEST idea to get one. Carrying a 4x12" is a pain in the neck most of the time, especially in the gray everydays of rehearsals. I carry my fullsized ones only for gigs and studio. Plus, you can diplomatically let other guys to carry the load instead of you. Keep it smart

For rehearsal the past few weeks ive been using my 120 watt ENGL head with the speaker in my mesa 50cal 1x12" combo. Its a 90watt black shadow and it sounds fantastic with it!!!

Guys I'm thinking about getting the marshall 2x12 cab instead now. What price would be good for getting one used?

I'm also considering getting a head in the jcm 900. I looking for some good distorted tones such as stuff from weezer, but with the versatility to also play some punk rock stuff like green day. Right now I'm considering getting a jcm 900 sl-x. I wondering what you guys think about that idea and what would be a good price for any used head in the 900 series?

That's what I used back in the day - a 2203 head with a 2-12 cab. The 2-12 is a good compromise, and not terribly heavy (unless you load it with EVM-12L's as I did). Sorry, I can't really help you with current Marshall pricing info, I sold mine in about 1989.

Another advantage of 2-12's is that you can mix speakers, which is all the rage these days. Before you go for a used Marshall, definitely check out the G212H Special at Avatar Speakers. Two Celestions, a G12H30 and a Vintage 30 for $278. I doubt you could find the bare speakers for that price, and the reviews of this cab's tone are great.

Iuse many different amp heads into either a Marshall 1912 1x12 or a Peavey Classic series 1x12.... Both cabs are closed back.... I have my pick of these amps, a JCM 800, a 5150 and a Peavey Classic 50 heads thru the little cabs. For small clubs it works great! In the basement i have my 5150 cab collecting dust! I had better go and clean it up! i have not used it in a year and half and it has been sitting uncovered.....!

A 1x12 is a good idea. Just to let you know I just downsized from a 4x12 Mesa to a 2x12 Mesa mainly because of the portability issue and the fact that 4x12 cabinets are extremely big and heavy. 4x12 cabs in my opinion are nothing but an inconvenience because unless you have another person to help you move it, GOODLUCK. If I were you I'd get a 2x12 and call it good. 2x12s are small enough that they can be carried by one person and aren't as big of a pain in the a$$ to move and take places. If you insist on going the 4x12 route I'd recommend getting (2) 2x12 cabs so its not as hard to transport them. I decided that if I ever wanted a 4x12 sound again I'd buy myself (2) 2x12s because it would be alot more managable for me to transport them by myself.

I would say 2x12" too, as long that you doesnt buy a cab the size of mine (2x2x3 feet)

For more volume and a great tone, plus low weigth, why don't you buy some Celestion Century speakers? I love mine

Actually, he would be fine using a 100 watt head with a 70 watt 1x12 cab but he would have to be careful how loud he turned it up because of the fact he could blow the speaker. Although I do agree that it would be a safer idea to make sure that the speaker cab wattage rating is more than your amp head wattage rating.

I'm considering getting a JCM 900 SL-X 100w head. I read from marshall site that they either have 5881 or EL-34 valves in them. I think most of used ones out now have 5881's in them. What values do you guys think would give the best weezer kind of tone? Would it also be possible to switch from 5881 valves to EL-34's?

It is possible, but it requires a bit of modding. EL-34's draw more heater current than 5881's, and you'd have to mod the bias supply to get it where you need it. I'm thinking you'd like EL-34's though and should just get that version instead of worrying about modding it. 5881's have more of a rounded bottom like 6L6GC's, but work better for cleans IMO, as they sound fuller, and the breakup into distortion isn't very smooth. Also, since they're warmer, the bass can sound flabby. EL-34's are more mid-oriented and have a smoother breakup. If you're going to be playing more overdriven, I'd say go for EL-34's.

I run my 100 watt JCM 800 head into a Mesa 90 watt 112 cab and it sounds killer.

What do you think would be a good price for a used jcm 900 sl-x 100w head and a marshall 1936 2x12 cab? I just need a good ballpark price for each separately cause I'm looking to buy these soon both used.

Well here in Canada i have seen a Marshall 1936 cab go for $360 canadian at a pawn shop. And i saw a JCM 900 SLX head in Vancouver a few years ago sell for $500 canadian
