2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

so I traded my Classic Vibe Tele Custom and Mesa Lonestar Special 4x10 separately to two different people today. Got 2 amazing amps in the process

First is the older Fender Deville 2x12

Sounds nice and bold and has that fender chime but still retains that thick low end on the low strings. Downside... Broken reverb :(

Second is my fave, for my Mesa I got this Traynor setup plus 250 (which I need right now)

The Traynor is a 1966 YBA-1 Bassmaster (JTM-45 with bigger transformer!) with a more modern grill and logo from a different amp (assuming the original grill was destroyed) 2 EL-34s for 45 watts of LOUD clean power for my pedals and it will play great with my P-bass once I get a bass cab. The cab I got in the deal is the Traynor Darkhorse 2x12 cab with 2 greenbacks angled at each other for improved bass response and tame harsh highs aswell as a convertible open or closed back. Overall a great gigging setup for my style and good pedal platforms... Both!

here is a snap of the Traynor stack..

I know but to be 100 percent honest I was not loving the cleans... I know how rare it is to find that 4x10 version of the LSS too. :(

I think the lonestar was just not my style , EL84s or something cause I never liked Voxes either. I crave BIG round cleans for my pedals and high headroom and the Traynor excels at both. Its essentially the Canadian Plexi/ JTm-45

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

I'd take a vintage Traynor over a Mesa any day. They sound great, are hand wired, are built like tanks, and can be great deals.

I got to crank my YRM-1 the other day after a band rehearsal and the thought that instantly popped into my head was "glorious". Still, even when not cranked, the amp sounds beautiful and pedals shine, too.

Nice trade!

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

thanks Brian , you know whats up and you are not even Canadian, nice!

I'm so glad I finally have one, I have or had 3 dream amps to get ,All vintage. A Traynor YBA-1 Head. an Ampeg VT-40/VT-22/V4 and a Soldano Hot Rod 100

not expensive vintage amps but ones I have always wanted and I can now cross the YBA-1 off my list. I could not be happier!

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

I love that logo and grill!!! I think I might get a new grill or grill cloth and logo for my YBA over time... The handle on my YBA-1 is broken too so I might get a new handle and when I do that I will "customize" my Traynor !

One thing I miss though...Reverb... the deville I got has broken reverb too so I'm just goanna forget taking it into the shop and just get a reverb pedal for use with both the traynor and Fender

Now more Traynor porn

Very nice amp. The bass player in my old band played an early-mid 60's Bassmaster into a Swamp Thang loaded Mesa 4x12. Perfect for that growly Geddy Lee/Geezer Butler thing!

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

I know of a store not too far away that has a period-correct YT-15 2x15 cabinet for that head. In fact, last time I was there, I'm pretty sure thay had a matching pair of cabs.

I'm another one who'd much rather have an old Traynor than any Mesa. I played a YBA-1 once, back in about 1977. It was a loaner from my local music store while my Twin was in the shop. It came with a 4x10 cabinet, and I remember being pissed at the store because I didn't think the amp would be loud enough. It was obvious... my Twin was 100 watts, and the Traynor a paltry 60. Ah, foolish youth.

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

yeah Traynors are LOUD and round cleans make for the perfect pedal platform. I love it! I never really fell in love with the Mesa so I figured it had to go

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

does anyone know if its safe to run this head into a 16 ohm 1960a marshall cab ? I don't wanna damage the amp but thats the cabs at my rehearsal space and it would save me having to lug my cab to rehearsals everyweek

More Traynor love:

These older Traynors are awesome!

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

Those old Traynors can handle a mismatch but I still wouldn't do it long term...

Get yourself a Weber Z Matcher if you want to use a different cab.

Also, just a quick side note...if that Bassmaster has a Ss rectifier (which I'm pretty sure it does based on the pics) it's not 45 watts...it's actually much closer to 90-95.

Yes, I know it only has 2 el34's but trust me, it's 90ish watts...

dayum! my cab has 2 greenbacks... don't wanna blow those !

Side note but I ran it through 2 speakers in the Marshall 1960a cab last night... it was loud and had headroom for days... I had the volume 1.5 out of 10 all night and we play in a LOUD stoner rock band

Watch it...you'll pop a pair of GB's in a HURRY with a SS rec Bassmaster!

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

jeez the guy before me gigged this setup too... sucks because this head and cab combo sounds so good at lower to medium volumes !

Oh well I need a bass cab anyways so I can get a bass cab so I can play bass through it and maybe it will sound good with guitar if not I will get another cab with a more efficient speaker or speakers... a 4x10 would be perfect!

You will be fine at lower volumes but if you really crank it get ready to eat a pair of GB's...

I never found the info...is it a ss rectified or does it have a GZ34??

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

SS rectified as far as I know , that is what a knowledgeable member of My Les Paul forums told me anyways.

I might be able to get away with gigging with this setup because we are always mic'd so I never get the volume up super high anyways. But again I don't wanna take a risk. Side note but I saw a local band gig with a Mesa Electra dyne combo and this Traynor cab with 2 greenbacks aswell and they were playing LOUD... and it sounded killer. But isn't the Mesa 100 watts ?

Re: 2 NADs ...Fender and vintage Traynor content

I've had a bunch of Traynors. Right now I have a early 70's Bassmate and an early 70's Bassmaster YBA-1A MKII ( thats the one thats 90 watts, not the amp the OP has, which are 40-50 watts, aned with a tube rectifier). Lots of great info on the net about old Traynors. Theres also a dedicated vintage Traynor group at Yahoo. I wonder if GuitarStv already restored his little Bassmaster..sure looks clean, those are great classic sounding little amp, especially with a new speaker- mine has an EV Force 15.

While the circuit on your old Traynor is essentially a knockoff of a Fender Tweed Bassman minus a couple resistor value differences, it an be 'Plexified' modded , and theres lots of people who have done that. Lots of details about it on the intrawebs. Because of the way the transformers saturate , among other things like plate voltages I think, it'll never sound dead on to a Plexi, but I'd be more interested in copping same original Tweed Bassman tone myself, and I don't see why it couldn't get plenty close with some minor changes.

The older ones like the 66-69, I think, are really the best..but a Metal amp? not unmodified...maybe with a pedal.

Also, I assume your Traynor, OP, has been restored. If not , time to do it, those old mallory Filter Caps have seen their best days. Those were about the absolute best caps ever made, they just don't make em like that anymore, unless maybe Sozo does, but I doubt it. One more thing, those are a lot better guitar amps than bass amps.
