Imagine you're building a custom guitar, just for you, that NOONE ELSE WILL OR CAN EVER SEE. does it have a tummy cut?
is it me or does it seem wrong that the new 2012 American Standard Tele model Fender has issued has a Tummy Cut... it looks ugly...
**** no!
you have no idea how much of an improvement that is on those guitars!
ive had to gig with teles and I'll tell you, at the height I played them (kind of high) my ribs suffered.
I think the no-tummy-cut on the Teles is a part of the charm... No thanks.
Tummy cuts actually kinda bug me. I wouldn't want one on my Tele. And that's not any kind of 'That's not how they were made 50 years ago' sentiment coming through. I just don't like them.
Having said that, I think it is an improvement in the design that will probably meet with approval from the majority of practical guitar players who aren't hung up on tradition. Also, like Woodcutter said, it's cool that they're offering it in some models.
But then, the chances of me buying a new American Tele any time soon are pretty damn slim, so f*ck me and my worthless opinion.
Tele's to me are sopposed to be a slab of wood in my mind... i'm not a vintage purist at all... i prefer a mix of vintage design with modern electronics and hardware... which is why i liked the older American Standard teles..
i like that slab of wood feeling of a tele so much i got a quote from Warmoth to build me a strat body with no tummy or forearm cut's... (simular idea of the Music Man Steve Morse model)... strat look with more of a tele feel... but i scraped that project and moved on to something different
The thing about the American Standard is that it's supposed to be a modern instrument to meet the needs of modern players. Yes, it was designed more than 60 years ago, and if you want one that is a recreation of that old design, Fender offers that. But since when is the American Standard vintage correct? If I cared, I'd be more pissed that they're using Strat saddles on the tele than the tummy cut.
I don't think they look that good but I bet a Tele with tummy & forearm cut like a Strat would be comfortable, wouldn't look right though. I don't see the point in killing yourself just to look cool, if it's uncomfortable don't play it (or mod it so it works for you).
I find the slab Tele completely comfortable. I actually prefer it over a Strat. You don't nipple ride a Tele. Sling it low around the waist and it's plenty comfortable. I don't see anyone whining about the lack of contours on a Les Paul.
The tummy cut doesn't bother me as much as the Strat bridge saddles. The vintage Tele bridge is important for the tone, and I'd like to see Fender produce them with 3 compensated saddles...
