2x10 cabs.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I've always liked the sound of the amps I've played that had 2x10 inch speakers but I've never A/B'd thosr same amps through a 2x12.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

Larger speaker allows a broader range of frequency more or less , a 15 will deal much better with lows and highs of a keyboard , 10s are a little brighter and tighter , 12s are pretty much standard for guitars. That being said a cheaper speaker won't have as much range because they are usually made with cheap materials and cost cutting construction. Your ear is pretty much all that matters unless you have a tin ear then you should never listen to yourself.

Well, it looks like I may noth get the cab I was looking at.

Home dude wants a bank transfer or check only.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

10's are chimey and sweet, the bass is tight, punchy, and not as deep as a 12. Many people will stack 4 10 's together to get more bass but still retain the chimey high end. They do sound nice clean but lack the overall big ambience of a 12 in speaker. I have a 4/10 cabinet with Jensen speakers. It's good for cleans but for distortion I prefer a 12 inch speaker by far. Many 12 inch speakers can sound very chimey too with the right amp settings. I have celestion V type speakers in my Fender 68 custom twin and they can sound chimey but also have the 12 inch speaker roundness and ambience a 10 just can't get.
It's a preferred taist thing really. Depends what type of sound your after and what amp your useing. Next step is to play both at a guitar store to hear the difference. There's no right or wrong.
On you tube just for kicks check out a Fender Super Reverb.....4 10 inch speakers in the cabinet. Them check out a Fender Twin Reverb or Fender Pro Reverb....Both have 12 inch speakers. All 3 amps use 6L6 tubes and the comparison isn't perfect but all are clean enough you should be able to then hear the difference in speaker sound mostly due to the size of the speakers.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

You know what I'd do?
Go buy a Fender Excelsior used and use it as a cab. I bet 1x15 + Hovercraft sounds fantastic, and you could a/b into the Excelsior for cleans.

Hehe...the Dwarvenaut kills through a 15. Oinkus has an Ampeg 15 cab that I ran through and it was devastatingly good.

Ya I hate to admit it but the lowly little Fender Excelsior tought me how good a 15 inch speaker can sound with a basic Fender tone circuit. Plenty of clean chime and big round jazz tone

Re: 2x10 cabs.

I prefer 10's period, but ESPECIALLY like them in the band! When I have a bass and drums, I just need punch and tight.

10's do it for me period.

They definitely seem to "focus" the mid range. Its a sound I like, but then again I love mids.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

Eh, F it. I'll find two 16ohm 8x10 cabs and run them in parallel. That'll please the neighbors.

(Btw, Jon. I ran a boost through the Dwarvenaut for the first time last night and holy crap. It made me smile like Lenny from "Of Mice and Men".)

The only downside is the Excelsior is only 13 watts I doubt that speaker is rated for much beyond that.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

I gig with an 18w head thru a 2x10 closed back with Greenbacks and I really like it.

I also own a 2x12 closed back and have gigged with it before and it kills.

The 2x12 for obvious reasons sounds bigger, but the 2x10 does not sound small at all. I am basically going for a balanced crunch sound. Big guitar sound with clarity.

All of that being said, one of my favorite setups was a head into a 4x10 closed back. Huge, punchy, and focused. I am basically going for that sound, just on a smaller level.

Re: 2x10 cabs.

played a peavey classic 50 4x10 combo yesterday at a jam.

Nice sounding amp. Did not care for the 10s though. They are quite clear/articulate and bright/chimey, like everyone said.

But they are incapable of dishing out the thump. No punch, no growl or OOMPH.

I'll take 12s any day.
