3 or 4 way switch? Custom Tele Setup

Re: 3 or 4 way switch? Custom Tele Setup

Welcome to the forum!

This all depends on what you want the switch to do, and if your Seth Lover is 4 conductor or not.

Nothing wrong with a 3 way blade and this is coming from a guy who had a strat with about 30 or tones out of it out of 2 pickups. There was 3 switches and 3 mini toggles.

The most popular 4th option you get is series for a hotter tone putting two pickups together for a hotter tone. This isn't to say you can't try other more extreme wirings. What I always liked about electronics is it's as crazy as we want it to be like Jerry Donahue's telecasters have super 5 way blades.

Back to it though. To see if that 4th position on a tele if its worth it.
There is a few youtube videos on it to see if it's a significant enough change. Some reason this mod works better on lower output pickups as I remember putting a 19k / 10H bridge pickup with something more Seymour Duncan 59 together in series and I honestly couldn't hear much of a difference. But then watching Joe Gore (tonefiend on youtube) show off the Jimmy Page wiring in a build he did it was way more night and day.

To get that illusive 4 way blade tone called series this is how I did it. I re-drew an obscure diagram on some blog or forum post when i was doing some of my own tone chasing. When testing the wiring for those who use hotter pickups like I do to set your multimeter to 200k when testing this without an amp. The reason is in case the resistance goes beyond 20k for two pickups such as putting a JB/Jazz together being one popular example

notice how I'm using an import 3 way blade, if you're using a USA style 4x4 3 way blade , same applies , 3/5/0 is all that we're using on a single pole. I did this a long time ago where I hardly remember it but if you want series to be your 2nd position change the open not soldered pole to be 3 instead of 1. However correct me if i'm wrong.
