30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

Re: 30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

They're still new... wait a year or so and they'll pop up on the used market for a fraction of what they're new right now (1000$ here in Canaduh) so what 6-700$...? maybe less? Your time will come!

sounds like a plan! :cool2:

Re: 30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

The Peavey and Laney designed for more vintage sounds than the others. I own the 2 x 10 version of the Laney and it's a great amp but it won't get as metal sounding as the Blackstar, Marshall and Orange. I think the Peavey is a great value for money amp and along with the Laney is an amp I will alway suggest to a first time tube amp buyer.

Got mine for $799 used not too long ago. Still have it, by the way. Recording with it this weekend, actually.
See? it mustn't have been used that much, that's a great price. Mine was 1000$ at Long&McQuade with shipping and everything.

Re: 30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

meh, i still prefer the thunderverb 50
Honestly, I don't know if you've tried one but it's far from being a meh amplifier.

I admit that a TV50 would be awesome and is a great amp. However, there's no way I could justify (in my actual situation) buying an amp with that kind of wattage and for more than twice what the TH30 is worth. Powerscaling to 15 or 7 watts is something that more than useful to me, it's actually necessary and the tone is great.

Is the TV better? Most likely it's got the edge but the TH is great and works perfectly for my situation.

no it's a great amp, but... 2 things

clean headroom

low end

you need at least 50 watts to get serious about either

Re: 30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

Great find! The peavey was the surprise for me. I'm very familiar with the Laney (though the way they EQ'd it wasn't showing it's strengths) and it has me curious about Orange amps. They have never really done anything for me in the past though it sounded more then the one trick pony i've always 'heard' them to be.

Re: 30-40Watt combos - nice demos here.

Thanks for posting those videos. I am in the market for a 30-40W 1x12 combo.

My first thought: That Peavey sounds like utter **** in every single example. And the Laney is not far behind. So they are out...WAY out.

My second thought: The Orange and the Marshall 401 are pretty gutless and bland, but the Marshall sounds less clattery...though still thin. Both probably have one-or-two-trick pony status for me, with the Marshall being more suitable.

So the Haze and the Blackstar were by far the top two to my ears. And in that two-way contest, the Blackstar was beaten hands down. It just has no personality in these examples. Plus the Haze is a bit cheaper, isn't it?

Wish the Mesa F30 and 5/25 were in there.

In summary, here is my ordered list, based solely on these videos:

1. Could make use of (i.e. "would consider owning"):

A. Haze (by a long shot)
B. Blackstar

2. Kind of cool for some things ("would play but would not own"):

A. JCM 2000 DSL 401
B. Orange

3. Terrible ("would rather sing my guitar parts through the mic than use one of these"):

A. Laney
B. Peavey

I also couldn't stand 3 out of 4 of those guitarists. The 2nd guy was not great, though I could at least stomach him.

Yeah I got it at L&M as well. Clean as a whistle, so it was a good buy.

Amen !

. . . i am a big believer that low end only starts at 50watts.

Every body's milage may differ, but for me : 50watts min for low end grunt.

I tend to agree with that. However, part of it can be remedied with the right cab. My 1x12 is beefy (really deep) and that compensates a bit. It of course doesn't turn it into a thunderous monster but helps nonetheless.

Believe me, if I was in a situation where I would need that kind of wattage, I'd have a TV50...

Of all the current production Oranges the TV50 is my 2nd fav, just after the 'even more classic sounding' Retro 50.

But you are right, the TV50 has serious amounts of low end thump.

I find the TV's a good hybrid between more classic fuzziness known to orange and a more modern gain sound. It is, in my humble opinion (although it's definitely not that simple) a midway point between a rockerverb and the Retro...
