Re: 335 kit

Call me cynical, but I can't see the wood or hardware being worth a crap if the whole kit is $200.

Whaddayamean? This closeup shows the quality quite well!

They look like Asian-made guitars that somehow didn't make the Q.C. cut at the factory.

It would be a heck of a lot of fun to build that, but like everyone is saying...too much $$$ for what you get. Plus you're probably paying $50-75 of that on parts that you're just going to throw away before you even get started. To get some decent pups, pots, switches, bridge, stop tail, tuners, etc. you're still going to spend an additional $300-500. Total cost would be close to $700!

For $100 LESS, you can get a Sheraton!!

Re: 335 kit

Good points... can't argue with any of them. I have and love my Sheraton... just looking at this from a fun project standpoint.

Re: 335 kit

I don't mind buying parts from GFS, but no way in hell would I buy any wood from there. IMO, the wood selection is one of the more/most important parts of the guitar, and it forms the fundamental tone of the instrument itself.

Who knows where the hell they get their kits from, let alone where the wood comes from, or who selects it for its resonance qualities.

As far as I know, the dude just goes around to factories and collects rejects. While some of them might be diamonds in the rough, I would hazard a guess that a lot of them are dead sounding.

Re: 335 kit

Exactly... all that excitement because they bought a warehouse full of B-stock stuff in another thread...

Its like...a once in a lifetime chance to own rejected budget line crap.

Re: 335 kit

I know of a german company that puts out really good stuff, for 300 bucks more. just the woodworks, though. some TLC and you've got yourself a great guitar with those germans.

Re: 335 kit

Guitar Fetish. Ugh.

I wouldn't touch that thing.

I ordered a Strat body from them and it was absolute garbage. Literally can't be used.

Re: 335 kit

GFS uses Paulownia for it's bodies. It's not the most resonant wood. lol.

Their Xaviere stuff with the GFS parts kick ass though. I assure y'all that it is not a collection of 2nds and discards.

I'd much rather build a kit than buy an Epiphone though. Maybe the Sheratons are great but every Les Paul and SG of theirs I've played were horrendous guitars.

I'd put the tone and playability of my Xaviere XV-620 against an American tele any day any time... the GFS 10k Alnico V bridge is insanely good.

Re: 335 kit

Nothing wrong with Paulownia. It's a fine musical instrument wood common in old (mostly Japanese) instruments.

Like any wood (ash, mahogany, etc.) there are good and bad quality woods withing the same species. That being said, Guitar Fetish quality is going to closer to the bottom of the barrel.

Re: 335 kit

I just bought a 1972 Gibson ES-320TD for a grand in v/good condition. Tons of mojo.
They were made with melody maker pickups but I am thinking of swapping them out for dogear P90’s to get more grit & brightness.
I havn't got a pic of mine but here's one I pinched of the net to give you the idea.

May be a option also?
