4 coats of sanding sealer, want a satin finish, what next?

I'm refinishing a Jackson neck, was sanded down to bare wood. I've done four coats of sealer, sanding in between, so I've got a good base. I want to do a satiny finish. If I do a coat or two of top coat lacquer (gloss), how can I bring it back to semi-satin?

Or, I'm already close with the sealer, should I stop now and call it good? Is there a reason why just the sealer can't be my finish?

Sanding sealer isn't very durable, doesn't stand up to all the wear it would get on a neck. It is formulated specifically to sand very easily.

Just get some clear lacquer in satin finish and spray on a couple coats. If you can only find semi-gloss or full gloss, then hit it with some steel wool to bring it down to a satin finish.

Thanks Doc. No one responded in time, so I did a little googling, discovered what you just said. I went ahead and did two gloss (I've already got it) coats and I'm gonna let it sit for a few days before I sand it. I'll see if I think I need to do another coat then.

Steel wool is what I was thinking to take the sheen off, but I've never worked with lacquer before.
