490R/498T combo needs to go OUT!!!

Alright,

I actually don't mind either of them too much. I actually thought I was going to do withoud a pickup change. But with time they get on my nerves more. and seeing as my axe needs to be rewired...

here's the scoop. I like the 498T except...
-Bad for palm muting
-muddy for rhythm playing (nice leads though)
-A bit too hot.
-nice cleans, but boomy bass

I want something...
-with the basic lead characteristic of the 498T
-with more palm mute chunk
-clearer in rhythm playing, but not bright at all.
-lower output, to get more detail and clarity.
-A similar clean sound to the 498T, but with less boomy bass.

As for the neck pickup, I'm probably going to go with an A2PN just because I know I like that. But I'm clueless for the bridge bucker..

It's going in an all mahogany, SG width les paul.

any help? Is this too tall an order?

I tried several pups in my Les Paul Studio cause I didn't like the 490R and 498T either. My Les Paul is a very bright sounding guitar. The Custom was my first choice, but ended up being too bright and didn't have the balls I expected. Tried the C5: too scooped. Tried the Custom Custom: too much mids and flabby low end. Anyway, the best combination for me ended up being a DM Air Zone in the bridge and a DM Air Norton in the neck (that pickup just SINGS in that guitar). There's probably more combinations I could hve tried, but I was getting tired of changing pickups and magnets. I contemplated the JB, but didn't like the sound clip on the Duncan site.

My Les Paul is a very bright sounding guitar. The Custom was my first choice, but ended up being too bright

my paul is very mellow and warm, no maple cap. I definitely don't want my guitar to be bright though... I just wish it sounded as good amplified as it did unplugged.

If you like the Alnico II Pro in the neck, why not take the bridge version too?

A2P didn't occur to me before for some reason... hmm... might try that.

But until then, can someone please at least tell me if my standards are too high and no pickup will meet my criterea ?

And what exactly is "bright"?
No clarity and no mud?
Hehe try the APH-1B or a Seth.

hmm... generally, I don't want it to be too trebly is what I mean by "not bright"... perhaps a rounded off top end is what I mean. I want it to bring out the naturally warm tones of the the mahogany.

I think you misunderstood a bit... I WANT clarity, and dislike mud

Still sounds to me like you want an AIIPro... Also taking into account that you have an all-mahogany guitar, but listen to the available samples on the main site first.

Sounds to me like you want a PAF clone in there. Seth, APH, and 59 might work.

I'm afraid my usual choice, the Pearly Gates, would be a bit too bright in your axe.

If you need more meat than that, the Custom would be a good choice.

+1 for the set of Alnico II Pro humbuckers.

My LP Classic is very birght and those helped smooth out the highs.

If you can, get the single conductor ones. I have the 4-conductor wires and both pickups hum a little bit when they are individually selcted. But they still sound great.
