50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

So alien spacecraft run on tubes? I hope China, Russia, and Slovakia upgrade their militaries. And I never thought I'd say that.

When I said "parts" I should have said "elements" (copper, silicon, zinc, lead, etc.). The alien overlords have no use for our pathetic technology.

I figured they'd be able to synthesize anything they wanted out of pure energy. But you're right. I think they'll have no use for our pathetic technology, but never underestimate the power of rock.

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

Well it's already been 25 years since the big 80's and **** near 20 years since grunge and new country. Time flys but there hasn't been that much change among guitarists. Guitar players will always gravitate toward vintage tube amps, especially if it becomes the specialized activity of the few. I can see digital and tube being more and more intergrated though.

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

Tube amps tomorrow will be like classic cars today. Expensive to own and maintain as everyday items, but studios, collectors, etc. will have, use and maintain them. Most casual players will have modelling...

That's probably the most realistic assessment I've heard so far.

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

God willin' and the creek don't rise I'll still be around in 50 years (one can hope!) and if Im still here I'll still be crankin' through old Fenders!

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

Modeling amps, look at what happened with the keyboard. You can get spot on recreations of Hammond, Rhodes, Moog synths etc out of modern Nords and Rolands and such. It would be sick to have the perfect Super Reverb sound then switch to a cranked 800 then switch to a Polytone type sound with a footswitch and have all those sounds SPOT ON, out of one light amp. That's a nice goal

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

At the moment we have players arguing the rival merits of modelling amps - some say Vox, some Line 6 etc. Given the possibility that in 50 years time a modelling amp that accurately produces all the sounds of classic valve amps will probably be the norm and cost next to nothing, what will the equivalent be of today's high end boutique amps ?

New modelling amps always contain emulations of the most modern valve amps as well as the vintage ones. When no-one makes new valve amps anymore what will there be left to model ?

Most spot on post in the whole thread.

The AxeFX has already had a lot of die hard tube-users go over to the digital side already; there's no reason to believe that modelling would not be used by most in 50 years.

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

The emulators of the future will be emulating vintage emulators from 2009

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

Once the sampling rate and bitrate get high enough, the difference between analog and digital is essentially nonexistent. (There's some law that proves this, but I can't remember the name of it.) I think Moore's Law should weigh in on this thread.

Re: 50 years from now: what amp will guitarists be playing through?

classic fenders, marshalls, voxs, mesas etc. along with brands that don´t exist yet.

Maybe we´ll have plug in tube (replacement) emulators that sound better than the originals, will work in your classic amps and you can select what brand of NOS tube you want it to sound like....even cranked power tube from barely audible levels up.

...and the alien overlords will be discovered to have a fatal aversion to the sound of amplified electric guitar.
