Well i have the 5150 head and cab but i leave the cab in the basement and have a little marshall 1x12 cab in the bedroom.... I have also used that head and 1x12 Marshall cab set up for many gigs... I like buying heads because you can use them with different cabs when you need to.... The 5150 combo is 60 watts and the head is 120... but i've heard from many a player that both are loud as hell! My 5150 head almost never gets used at home.... Too loud! Only when everyone else is gone and i'm home alone i'll use it. You can get a pretty good bedroom level out of the head because there is so much preamp gain...

In the end if you like higain amps the 5150 may be for you... but they are stage gear and not meant for the home really.... But that didn't stop me from buying one... I use some practice amps at home mostly....

I'd say go for the head..... I warn you they are heavy amps to haul.. the head alone is 100pounds.....

Re: 5150 combo

I think the 5150 is okay if you got a big bedroom or you just dont care about having a huge amp crammed into a small space, I have a small room and I really dont care. All this 5150 talk lately is making me depressed I dont have one, the guy I was gonna buy the amp from all of a sudden had sentimental value for the amp and is second guessing wether he should sale it to me.

Re: 5150 combo

To put it simply; don't get this amp if you can only play it in your bedroom.

Re: 5150 combo

all this talk of the 5150 is making me want to buy one =/ and WFD realy didnt help the other day

that is sad....

Hey Davey.... Is or only amp that little Marshall in your signature photo? I just got a little Marshall MG10cd the same size as that thing in your picture..... Picked it up for $15..... neat! If you love that huge bassy metal sound try and get a used 5150 oneday.... my cab was really beat up and had been on tour with a fe acts as it was Peavey's loaner amp back in the 90's... They would loan it to Peavey Artists and i snagged it for $250.... The Head i got is in mint shape for $400 Canadian! I see the odd 5150 head for around $500 used once in a while!

Re: 5150 combo

I've got a 5150 half stack that has sat in my closet for years. It is way too loud to be played in a bedroom. I'm saving it because it is a block letter edition and I got an amazing deal on it about 10 years ago. Plus, when the wife and I have our house, it will be used. For now, in a townhouse, too loud! The 5150 combo is still ridiculously loud. You could use it in a bedroom, but I don't think you would get the optimal tone out of it at bedroom levels. Those amps need to be cranked to sound right. I've got a Flextone III that I use for bedroom jamming and it serves me very well. Only get the 5150 combo if you're going to be playing regular bar gigs. Get the 5150 head if you're going to be playing large clubs.

Ya my 5150 is the Block Letter version too... and at home i use a bunch of small amps over the 5150.. my main practice amp is an older fuzzy sounding Princton Chorus amp.... The PC amp is only good for soft and quiet practices for the player that likes fuzz over the top dirt sounds... But it works great at home even when people are sleeping in the house!

The only tube amps i may fire up at home often is my C30, and my 65 Deluxe amp.... other then that it is my Solid State Berhinger, Marshall, and Fender amps

Re: 5150 combo

Too loud. At 60 watts, my 5150 Combo never even got over 4 in a band setting. At 2 or below it sounds really buzzy and uninspiring. These amps are designed for live and LOUD use and not for practicing at home.

Re: 5150 combo

I have the stack and the 212 combo, and the combo is a great amp to get, but it's tough to lug around. It's big, heavy, and hard to get in cars and the like.

If it's an option, you may also want to consider getting a head, and a separate 2x12 cabinet. It may end up costing you a little more in the long run, but it's more versatile, and easier to store/move as you need to.

Re: 5150 combo

I say get the combo if you plan on gigging in the future that way you dont have to spend extra cash on a bigger amp. I was playing the combo yesterday and suitable bedroom levels are volume on 1! It still sounds great low however.

Re: 5150 combo

The problem with the combo is that it weighs like 85 pounds and is voiced differently from the head. I'd get a head and 2x12 cab.
