Not to mention the guitar they are in. In a Strat, they may sound more clear. In a mahogany body guitar with more lower mids and lows, they may have a little mud to them depending on the natural tone of the guitar.
That said, my preference is the '57 Classic in the neck. It's a little hotter than the Alnico II Pro and more responsive to my playing. I have it and a Classic Plus in a MIJ Contemp Tele.

I like '57's, but I put A5's in them as my guitars have warm-toned woods.

Love My alnico II Pros in the neck of my Les Pauls> They sing they cry, then for a little more push I use a chicken soup overdrive. After the gig I even have non guitar players coming up to me complementing my tone!
They cut very well when needed, just ride the volume on the guitar. Then when it's your time turn up and step forward and watch peoples faces.
You can tell by my writing that my last gig went well to say the least!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about putting an A5 mag in the A2P to drop the mids a bit and push the treble and bass.......would that make the A2P thicker?
I have tried both the '57 and the A2P in the neck of my LP and there were a couple things that like liked and didnt like about each.

likes: very vintage, smooth clean tone. Pretty juicy lead/overdriven tone.
dislike: very boomy bass when clean, muddy and still bassy when overdriven and just didnt seem to have any "hair" or "bite" to it when overdriven
A2P:
likes: very vintage, sweet, articulate clean tone. Pretty sweet, voice like lead/overdriven tone. Nice smooth, non-boomy bass when both clean and overdriven
dislikes: when overdriven, too much mids that makes the sound have more "air" to it rather than "thick and chuncky."

After reading your post, we obviously think of different things when we think of "thick". For me, the more mids in a pickup, the thicker it is. A2, to my ears, sounds 2nd thickest of all the magnets - the first is A8. A5 sounds great too, it's just not as thick - powerful lows, present highs, but not really a whole lot going on in the midrange. Not scooped, just neutral. To my ears, A5 needs a pretty powerful wind to sound thick.
Actually, if you have the ability to degauss magnets, I think you might like degaussed A5 a whole lot. If you don't have the ability to degauss magnets, it's $7 in parts from stew mac. Just pick up a polarity tester and a neo disk magnet. There's a wonderful how-to guide written by Zhangulin, and it's a good way to further tweak your pickups.
