Re: '59 vs Seth

Not better, just different. The Seth is darker and sustains like crazy. I like it better for soloing than rhythm because of it's more Gibson-like tone.
The 59 is tighter, less mids, and is clearer sounding than the Seth. Both are great neck pickups, but the Seth is more organic and darker, and the 59 is rounder and has tighter lows and clearer highs. My two main Pauls are C-5/59 and CC/Seth. I like them both about equally. The C-5/59 covers a little more ground tho.

Re: '59 vs Seth

I agree with gearjonser. Both are great bridge pickups. I like the Seth Lover slightly more in the bridge, and the 59 slightly more in the neck.
The Seth Lover bridge seems to have a little more snarl but the 59 sounds slightly more open and raw. I think the SL is slightly darker because of the cover. I think a covered 59 would sound more like the SL, but the different magnets definitely change the sound a bit also.

Re: '59 vs Seth

This is an old thread, so I've had to edit this post. I was using a CC/Seth in one LP, but have since removed those and replaced them with the 50th Ann Seth's with engraved covers. I have to say they're possibly the best A2 pickups I've ever heard.

On the Seth set, you'll notice a bigger contrast between the bridge and neck.
The bridge is right where I like it tonally, although the Seth neck is a fairly dark sounding pickup, compared to it's bridge, and also the 59 neck and bridge.

I'm starting to agree with Stevo about Les Paul pickups......I think the Seth Bridge with the 59 neck would be my ideal combination for a vintage sounding Les Paul.....or any other mahogany/maple guitar for that matter.

Also, there's no need to pot a Seth. I've used my set on the highest gain possible, and it doesn't squeal. I also learned that it's very easy to ruin a Seth by heating it, due to the butyrate bobbins, from what Evan told me.
He cautions people NOT to do it.

I really like the clips of the seth on the website with gain in the bridge position, but everyone here says that the bass is "too loose" for rock.... what does that really mean?

Re: '59 vs Seth

I like the bass response that the Seth has in a Semi-hollow body, like my Sheraton. In this guitar, it has good highs and clean lows, clean enough to play jazz, funk, and country tunes without woofing or mudding out.

Re: '59 vs Seth

Woofing! That exactly describes the problem I had with the stock pickup in my epiphone, I replaced it with a superdistortion and now it's fine. Sounds metal though, not tubey or hollow. So for hardrock and stuff with a lot of powerchords, seth lover would exhibit problems? The 59 though would be ok?

Re: '59 vs Seth

I haven't voted as I think they're equally great pickups.

I like the Seths in my LP with my Jubilee, but I've had some great sounds from '59s too and they'd be high on my list for any HB-equipped guitar.

As GJ says, not better just different.

Re: '59 vs Seth

I use the Seth as the neck pickup in my semi-hollowbody Monoco because it seems to have less bass than the 59N. Less bass helps me get a clearer, less woofy tone. The 59N seems to have less mids and more treble and more bass than the Seth. More bass works fine if it's a bridge pickup, and I love the 59B, but the 59N just has more bass than I need from the neck pickup...even tho the 59N seems to have more treble than the Seth neck. The Seth neck gets fat, full tone with less woof from the bass frequencies. Lew

Re: '59 vs Seth

I've got to have a set of Seths in this guitar. From what Lew and others have said it sounds like the Seths are what I want because I don't like a lot of bass in my guitar tone. I love that midrangey, gutsy overdriven chime tone like especially what I hear in the song White Room.

Re: '59 vs Seth

Nothing, I mean *nuthin'* will ever replace the Seths in my LP :smokin:

I've done such mistake 1-2 years ago... but not this time! I bolted 'em in there :D

I really, really, really like :D the Seth bridge ... :bigthumb:

Re: '59 vs Seth

I have 59N pickups in my SG and my LP and the 59 is woofier in the LP,but just perfect in my SG...I've not tryed a Seth N yet,but if Lew says it's great,I see one in my future...The fact that it has less lows is a good thing and maybe an A5 Seth would be even better? Or A4 even?

I'm with you. It can do so much. But I do really like the '59 for some applications. The Seth is currently my fav though.

Re: '59 vs Seth

Not to try to hijack----but---The Seths are only a few dollar cheaper than the Antiquities---so I assume you all preferred the Seth's. Do you like them better? I am going to be buying some pickups for my Les Paul so I am interested!--lol----cheers!---JIMO

I've changed my mind - the Seths have it! :smack:

'59s are cool pickups, but the Seths just have that extra smoothness and responsiveness that I love.

+1 to all that gearjoneser said....I like the seths a lot more than the 59's
to me they sound classic and not as compressed...IMO

I love my Dot with that exact combination . . . I can't vote on this because I love them both.
