I want to get a baritone guitar, but I want the tuning to be EADGBe still instead of the ADGBEa tuning or etc. would it be a good idea to put the bass iv strings on a baritone?

If you're going to run the bottom 5 strings from the set you'll need to re-cut the nut but I imagine you'd be fine otherwise

stringtensionpro.com <-- Good way to see what is what with the strings and how they'll react to your guitar tension wise before you buy strings.

When you edit the scale length in the program, measure (or estimate) the lengths of each string from ball to tuner (not saddle to nut) if you want to get the correct tension figures.
(Some people disagree with me that tension is ball to tuner, but they be wrong = P)

Re: 6 string bass strings on a baritone?

You'll have to beef up the strings quite a bit if you want to tune a baritone to octave tuning. Most Bass VI type instruments are 30" scale length. Most baritones hover in the 27-28" range. The strings for Bass VI's are gonna be set for that 30" scale length. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I just think it could be done better with a different instrument. What is the reason for passing on buying a Bass VI or similar and going with a baritone instead?

My reason is simply I want to be able to play EADGBe. I would like to also avoid the single coils in most bass vi's. I also am not much of a fan of the Ibanez bass vi model. I also didn't take into consideration the scale...

Do you not think the scale length would have to much effect on playability?

Re: 6 string bass strings on a baritone?

Do you want flatwound or roundwound? What is the tuner config, 6 in line or 3+3? Do you want low tension like a guitar or high tension like a bass?

Here is an example of a set of Daddario Nyxl roundwound single guitar strings that I made using string tension pro for the scale and tuning you mentioned based on 6 in line tuners. A bass string is used for the low E. It is based on the tension of a 10 on a strat in standard tuning.

Gauge Tension
0.0190 in. 24.640 lbs
0.0260 in. 23.700 lbs
0.0350 in. 25.040 lbs
0.0500 in. 25.240 lbs
0.0700 in. 26.350 lbs
0.0850 in. 27.270 lbs

Just fiddle with www.stringtensionpro.com then order the singles from www.daddario.com

Schecter makes a Hellraiser BassVI with two EMG humbuckers. You could pull them out and go with a different set. Another idea would be to build one with Warmoth.
