60's Fender Utah Speaker Question

How many watts were they? I have an original pair in my '65 Bassman 2x12 cab and they sound very good/loud to me!

I've decided to pull them out of the cab to preserve them, since they are original and I play very loud rock 'n roll/ old school '77 punk and I don't want to blow 'em.

The reason i'm asking is because I just contacted Ted Weber of Weber Speakers for his recommendation on what would be suitable replacements considering the style of music and amp I play and he recommended a 12F150 (25 watts) paired with a 12F150B (25 watts)..Both ceramic and lightly doped.

I have to admit, I was surprised he'd suggest 25 watt speakers since I made it very clear to him in my e-mail that my band plays loud! I was expecting him to say at least 50 watt speakers..

So...At this point the Utah's are actually plenty loud, so if you guys tell me these speakers were rated at around 25-30 watts, then i'll consider Mr. Webers recommendations, but if they are rated higher, then I may opt for the 50 watt versions. I don't want my future new speakers to be less powerful than the current Utah's. The Bassman head is rated at 50 watts BTW

I believe that Ted has answered your question, and you might have missed it...

If an amp is rated at a certain level RMS, then the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) speakers are usually +/- 10% of that rating. Rare is the company that overbuilds, because it's just too costly. Therefore:

There you go!

Yeah, you may be right..The Utah's are probably 25 watters..

What would you say if I decided to go the British route? One option I mentioned to Ted was this one:

1x Silver Bell 50 watts (ceramic, lightly doped)
1x 1230-55 30 watts (ceramic, lightly doped)

He said this was also a good setup if I wanted to go the British way, and his recommendation was for the American Fender sound.

I'm now thinking going with the Silver Bell & 1230-55 route..

Re: 60's Fender Utah Speaker Question

+1 for the Brit/Fender idea! Go for it!

Yeah, i'm about 95% convinced on this speaker setup at this point..Do you think the 30 watt-50 watt discrepancy will be a problem?

Should I even bother mentioning to Ted Weber about making me a 1230-55 50watt version (I don't know if it's even possible) to match the Silver Bell's 50 watts?

I've never heard of a 12H30 in any other way but 30 watts....I guess you would call it a 12H50! :)
