8 ohm vs 16

What's the differance between impedance in guitar cabs? Does a 8 ohm sound different than a 16 ohm, if so how. does one have more of a break up. Please explain

Re: 8 ohm vs 16

Me wants to know too, as I'm currently looking for speakers to fill my empty Marshall 4x12 with. I can't decide whether to use 8 or 16 Ohm speakers....

Re: 8 ohm vs 16

They should sound exactly the same if matched (16 ohms total cab with 16 ohms amp out, 8 ohms total cab with 8 ohm amp out etc)

Re: 8 ohm vs 16

Although I think Hames Jetfield's question is different. Your talking about using different speakers with different wiring to acheive the same total ohmage right? I can't help with that, I vaguely remember another thread with a similar subject but can't remember the name have a search though you might find some better info otherwise I'm sure tons of the guys on this forum can chime in and help with that.

Re: 8 ohm vs 16

theoretically there is zero difference. Most people cant tell the difference if there is one.
SOME people will say there is a difference, but it is one of those things that cant be proven and nobody but those few people can hear. Surely its not all in their head though, because that never happens to guitarists....

Re: 8 ohm vs 16

some people claim that higher impedences use more windings in the transformer, and somehow sounds better because of that.

however, i think the tonal differences are negligable. the purpose of having different impedences to choose from has much to do with compatibility between heads and cabinets and little to do with fine tuning your tone. that's what different guitars/pickups/amps/tubes/speakers/ect are for ;) .

my take on this is to use whatever impedence works with your setup, and if you're looking to make any changes to your tone, you're probably better off looking elsewhere in your signal chain.
