80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

You guys want to know what hair metal leads to? (other than hot chicks and a really good time)

I've always loved the fact that in the video of their second single, After the Rain, the guy with the acoustic guitar is rocking out harder than the rest of the band combined.

On a more serious note, yes, there were some acts that got really poppy at the end. What is often lost is that this was part of a general widening of the profile of the genre: Other bands – which sold fewer records but were no less real – took the edgier take of Guns N' Roses further than they themselves were willing to (see below), others experimented with fusions of different genres; the genre was in fact far more diverse by 1990 than most people are willing to give it credit for.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

^^^I must admit,,,,that's different.

Never even heard of Spread Eagle before. He's getting it and hitting it on those leads for sure.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

As for Skid Row, I always considered their tone to be a little sludgier and grittier than the "standard" glamhair tone,,,,Youth Gone Wild being my first impression.

When I think glamhair the first thing that comes to mind is those album covers when the various bands were trying to look "almost"(lol) feminine. Even some of the more hollysleeze bands were doing it.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

Yes, it is quite obvious why Nelson sold more records. ;) Commercially speaking, this was pretty abrasive for the time.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

I distinctly remember seeing the Shout At The Devil cassette and thinking "no way I'll like this sissyspit",,,,,,,,,and then I did! lol
Bought my own copy like a week later.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

Don't bore us, get to the CHORUS (meaning, turn on the Boss SC-1....)

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

I'll have a ball comparing the DC-2, the DC-2W and the TC 3rd Dimension this Christmas.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

Sirion - Glad to see someone else likes Spread Eagle! Super Sleazy...more skid row than other hair bands.

I also want a report on your chorus shootout.

I liked that Spread Eagle album..that and all the Cinderella stuff (guilty pleasure haha). Kingdom Come were great too. Those bands actually sounded different from the usual Kerrang! fare...and of course some of the older shock-rock bands that later became associated with glam (but were'nt ...ie Twisted Sister, Lizzy Borden, W.A.S.P etc..) 'cuz they were around way before the whole glam thing exploded & had their own thing going...

Maiden, Priest, Dio, Yngwie, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Savatage, Saxon, Accept..that's the kind of 80's stuff that's timeless as far as I'm concerned ..not to mention all the underground ****. That's where the real gems were :bigthumb:

Just listened to that Spread Eagle track....
I had never heard of them.
Damn good stuff though.

Spread Eagle practiced above my work on Lansdowne St in Boston. In the Boston days they were called BANG. I became good freinds with them and even live teched for Paul Di Bartolo at a couple of shows. He is an amazing guitarist. I still go back and forth with Rob here and there on email. They have a NEW Spread Eagle with Rob and Ray being the only original members.

Here they are before Ray and the name change

Their second disc was much grittier, bordering on thrash.

I love that second Skid Row record. “Monkey Business” has been my alarm clock for the last eight years.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

One piece of gear some of these guys used back then was a BBE Sonic Maximizer.

I was watching a Viv Campbell vid and he mentioned it in his rack rig; which reminded me of way back when...

The 422 model like this one is a fine example:

https://reverb.com/item/3651075-bbe-sonic-maximizer-422

What these do is act like a crossover but also "fine tune" the speakers, so the lows are tight and thumpin and the highs are crystal clear.

I had one of these units with my 24 ch PA back in the day, but dudes would use them in their guitar racks as well.

Re: 80s Hard Rock/glam Metal Tone

Aphex Aural Exciter was another version that was in common use.

And of course, dare I say it? Perhaps quietly... Scholz Rockman

Spread Eagle is awesome. Damn shame they were too late to the game.

They threw the best parties in their practice space. That was a great time to be around Boston Music, Extreme, Spread Eagle, In the Pink, Tin Pan Alley, MASS, the list goes on.
