A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Alright so this harmonica player came through town who was supposed to be some big shot (no names will be named) and he was playing at the club where I run sound. He started pushing folks around trying to be real rude and crap. He went down to the local music store to rent a harmonica amp (because he couldn't be troubled to bring his own) and proceeded to rent an Ampeg Super Jet. He gets it down to the club and plugs in and turns it on. He starts playing and apparently he just isn't liking what he's hearing.

After about a half hour he gives up and sends his manager down the street (about a block) to the music store to tell them that the amp is broken and he needs another. Well the manager begins insisting that the amp is broken at the store and the store owner (a friend of mine) REFUSES to believe it because the amp worked perfectly when it was at the shop. The manager just won't give up and the owner of the store said he'd come down and hear it to see what was going on before he went through the trouble of getting them another amp.

He gets down to the club and tells him to play and the guy starts playing and IMMEDIATELY my buddy the owner realizes what's wrong with the amp. He walks up on stage, looks at the amp.....

and turns the tremolo off.

LOL

I hate pushy "professional" wannabes who can't operate something as simple as an amplifier.

(For the record, I wasn't there while he was trying the amp or I'd have probably proclaimed him an idiot in front of his band and everyone there for their setup)

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! He sounds like he could be famous. A pompous idiot of a player who doesn't want to search for a problem and fix it on the spot, but rather make things more complicated. Musicians should know their gear or the gear they rent. Idiot.

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Harp players live in thier own world....I'm convinced of it.

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

i love those guys. they boost my ego on daily basis. :)

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Great story...even more real to me after having been in the club and the music store (I still wear my t-shirt from the music store...lots of people ask about it )

Reading this made me long to go back to Clarksdale and Ground Zero

Best regards to the wonderful folks of Clarksdale.

ill be playing at ground zero in january before the IBC. never been there but a guy i play with has played there a few times

what club do you work at?

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Jesus, I hate harp players. For every James Cotton, who is fantastic, there are 1,000 guys with bowling shirts, Bassman RI's, and a can of Murrays who want to be Kim Wilson. A pox on them all...

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Don't even get me started about harp players.

Show up at a gig and want to sit-in. Have harps in only two keys and want the band to accomodate. Or, have harps in ALL keys and want to play that thing ALL night long. Man... I hate harp players...

I run sound *at* Ground Zero so I'll definitely be seeing you in January Jeremy :)

Jeremy...hope you have a bit of extra time to look around Calrksdale.... maybe go to some other clubs also.

Lots of Blues related history in the area..if that interests you.

Enjoy.

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

That story reminds me of a wedding I did a few months ago - the DJ said he had lots of "really nice, very expensive" equipment, not to bring anything 'cause we could use his. Sure enough when I get there he had a Peavey amp that was older than me (but heavier and not in as good of shape :biglaugh:) and he had an Optimus (radio shack) karaoke tape deck with one extra 1/4" input.

Plus he didn't know how to work the iPod, so I had to run up there periodically to change playlists....and he thought my name was Kevin so every so often he would say "hey Kevin, can you come back up here" through the PA....but he'd have to say it two or three times before I'd realize he meant me.

But at least he didn't bring a harp with him! (just a cheezy personality)

Watermelon Slim, what a harp player.

I counted 23 on stage tonight. He also had about 10 different slides for Dobro. My favorites being the 13/16" sparkplug socket, and the regular family size salt shaker.

Watermelon Slim has played Ground Zero a couple of times now and is unbelievable everytime he is there. I really enjoy having him and his band in town and they just recorded video and audio for a dvd/cd project that they were working on and did it all at Ground Zero. Hopefully that will all come out.

Yeah, let me know when that is. I'm supposed to be in Little Rock some time in January. I'd like to time my trip. Heck, I bet I can talk Jolly into it as well.

Re: A bit of humor about people who can't use amps...

Hey that'd be ultra cool to get all you guys in the club. It's also supposed to be a jam so hey, bring your axes! I'll see what I can do to find out whether Morgan is gonna be in town that week or not and see if he's gonna make an appearance :)
