Re: A custom 5 based trembucker.
We have to talk about terminology, Micha.
you have two pickups, see the pic you posted earlier.
1 is named the Custom5+: that is 13.2K. Trembucker spaced
1 is the Jb/FS hybrid: That's 15.55K.
You say you installed the JB/FS hybrid 13.2k: which one is that?
That being said:
The Alnico8 will for sure fatten up the mids and boost the output. In a JB/FS hybrid that works great, in a guitar that lacks mids or needs to be as aggressive and tight as possible. I have no idea what that other pickup is, how it sounds like or how it is built. So, no judgements there.
The JB/FS hybrid A5 (15.5K version) should be biting but with a fluid lead, especially in a LP it should work fine.
But, seeing it's 13.2K, with alnico 8, I do think I understand how that works and I think this pickup is like the SH6N but with a fatter midrange (same wire gauge, same ballpark wind, only mag is different).
Options:
- try the jb/fs hybrid 15.5K: I have a strong feeling that would work better for you. There's more copper on the coils so that tames the highs quite a bit (output is not related to DC resistance, so this pickup shouldn't be a lot hotter than the other).
- try this pickup with an alnico II as well as Alnico V. I would recommend the A2 because the 'tone' A2 and A8 yield are fairly similar but the A2 is weaker (i.e.: will make the pickup less aggressive), with a smoother top end. Should solve a lot of issues.
- the A5 will only make the high end worse and the aggression will only stay the same. That's why I believe A2 would work best.
Hello everyone.
I went to get my guitar today at my luthier's house.
The hybrid jb / full shred is mounted on it. I can test as I want .... I think I made a mistake by making this customshop pup
Let me explain ....
The first important thing:
this pup has an aggressiveness like I've never heard before. I think this is clearly because of the alnico 8.
I like metal ..... I like to have power with a pup, like we all know with usual pickups .... But here it's too much.
Each guitar stroke is a blow in the face. It's too aggressive (I never thought I'd write such a thing one day).
Attention ... I'm not saying it's a bad pickup .... certainly not, but clearly with alico 8, too aggressive.
What I love is that he have the harmonics like active pup's (emg 81). It's really the same.
The second thing is the sound in general. It is to different from the custom 5 ... in any case, with the alnico 8.
The sound is fluid, limpid, articulate. Perfect for solos. But the jb coil is too present, we still recognize his note. the overall sound is not enough Paf oriented.
This pup is great it goes without saying. I will have to put an alnico 5 to test.
The alnico 8 in bridge =
Much too aggressive.
The mids are really round but put in front. He bites a ****ing lot.
But in general, the highs are very crystalline / bright.
I never thought a Pickup with DC resistance of 13.2 could be so aggressive.
What I do not like at all With alnico 8 is that in the sound there is nothing organic. Perhaps a little uncontrollable.
