A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Phat Cats DO hum, they are NOT hum cancelling. Only when together neck and bridge cuz theyre rwrp

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

4. Most P90s buzz but the Phat Cat is hum canceling
The phat cat is only hum cancelling when two of them are used together, as they are RW/RP. On their own, they are NOT hum cancelling, but resist hum better than a normal P-90 because of the cover.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Ok, so it sounds like either

p-90's (2 for hum cancel)

or

PG's

The neck PG makes sense, is there a bridge Alnico 2 that is fatter but will still growl??

On the speaker front. I came across two Celestion G12H's Aniversary edition for $90!!! THis is a deal, would these growl like I am lokking for in a 2x12 open back cabinet?

Thanks

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

I checked the specks on a CC and man-o-mam they have huge output. Too hot for me I think. I want the tubes and amp to drive the tone so I want low output.

I am afraid p-90 will be trebely in the bridge and PG too. Any other options, or a I wrong about this?

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

I don't think you'll have that problem with the PG OR the Phat Cat... the Phat Cat has more low mids than a real p-90 from what I've heard. I'll tell ya in a week when I receive mine and put em in!

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

I'm gonna go PG for the pup - but phat cat would be good too.

Now, you're gonna laugh, but after you compose yourself, I want you to seriously think about this: Boss HM-2

PG bridge, PC neck would be awesome...

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Aceman that is the plan. I want a low output speaker, into a good amp (blitz 50) pushed by a tube screamer when needed.

Oilpit, I'm with you on that PG, PC combo but I think that a PC would hum in that position without the other PC at the neck to cancel it out. Am I right on that? I could be wrong.

It would hum, but unless your playing mega high gain metal, it won't really be a problem. It sounds like your going for a pretty mellow setup and I think a PHat Cat would be perfect.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

I don't know. I think option 1 is:

P-90's in both N and B

Option 2:

PG neck, and something alinco 2 in the bridge spot. (I don't know)

How about a Seth lover?? Would it growl? Would it match a PG neck? What else will growl?

due to the uneven coil wind of the PG, it will growl pretty good on its own. I would suggest the Alnico II Pro in the neck and the PG in the bridge

price is decent if they're gently used. those speakers need a lot of hours to sound decent in my opinion - very harsh and bright at first. they don't have near as much mids as a greenback or V30. I generally consider the lower mids to be what makes the "growl" and the G12H30 has strong bass and highs with flatter mids. up to you. also keep in mind that 2 G12H30s do not handle enough power if you run your amp cranked. at high volumes, you're putting out 70-80W (close to 100 dimed) and those speakers will have a much shorter than usual lifespan. if you're not going to drive the amp hard, you're fine.

the speakers I mentioned have strong low-mids and would suit you well. the Eminence Private Jacks can be had for $80 each shipped if you shop around - very reasonable. the Governor would be another model worth looking at. both are pretty popular and you might find a used pair floating around. Scumbacks are ~$200 each (shipped) so I can understand not wanting to go that route.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Would an alnico Pro be fuller in the bridge than a PG, or a SL, or even an ANT?

usually the A2Pro is put in the neck, with the PG in the bridge because the PG has a edgy tone due to the uneven coil wind and its hotter than the A2Pro. The A2Pro is smoother sounding due to the even coil wind and it is not as hot as the PG. That is why i said PG (bridge), A2Pro (neck)

If you've got it narrowed down to those 2 options P90s are the only way to go. The PG/A2P are more of a smooth, singing kinda sound. The P90s are in your face growl...
That being said the PG/A2 are killer pickups, just not the best for what you want.

the PG is NOT smooth like the A2Pro! they completely different beasts. The A2Pro has an even coil wind, which gives it that warm, singing tone. The PG has an uneven wind which gives it an edgy in your face sound. the P90's will NOT growl like the PG!
