Hmmm..you may well be right! I remember at the time Guitar World magazine had an interview with Jake discussing the new album (I still say album, should say CD), and his gear. He used a number of amps, and I distinctly recall Jake mentioning some 60s & early 70s Marshalls (100 watt super leads, IIRC), but I'm sure a Budda or a number of other amps could have been mentioned as well. The list of gear for the album was pretty extensive I believe.

As a side note: Are Buddas capable of the extreme gain displayed on that CD? I know Jake uses/used a Boss SOD in that time for gain boost, but the soundclips I've heard of Buddas make them sound fairly tame (but great tone).

I consider Budda amps to be total tone MONSTERS, Jeff!
I played the 80W head about 2 years ago, and had no problem getting serious crunch out of it. I like rolling back the tube distortion myself and then using an OD to get a great, complex, multi-hued distortion sound.

oooooooo..I must seek out one then to play through, if only for kicks!

I played the 80W head about 2 years ago, and had no problem getting serious crunch out of it. I like rolling back the tube distortion myself and then using an OD to get a great, complex, multi-hued distortion sound.

Interesting..I've always done the opposite...just a slight boost frorm the pedal. I'm curious as to which pedals you like?

EDIT: And marvel at the power of the Internet! Jake's gear About halfway down the page are the amps.

I really like Slash's tone. Lately I've been listening to Robin Trower a lot. his tone is so 1970's Arena Rock but I love it. I guess it sounds like a, what's that thing called?, Univibe?

Big Star, "Radio City" The best Strat ever recorded, IMHO, and some of my fave guitar playing and song writing. They were around in the early 70's and my brother gave me an unmarked tape of them and I couldn't believe how great it was. I still get goosebumps when I listen to it.

Husker Du, "Zen Arcade" a freakin' wall of sound that hasn't been surpassed. Like a magnet for the mind.

Sex Pistols "Never Mind.." Still the heaviest thing ever recorded in a lot of ways. First album I learned front to back, back to front.

REM "Chronic Town" The reason I started playing and bought a Rickenbacker.

Keith Richards "Take it So Hard" Made me learn open G and love it.

Gun Club "Live" and "Lucky Jim" the reasons I own a Strat and have a Fender amp. Mojo to the max.

Neil Young "Live Rust" emotion, baby.

Fairport Convention "Unhalfbricking" a blend of a lot of stuff I love that doesn't really sound like anything else.

UFO "Strangers in the Night" classic Marshall/Gibby tone.

Vinnie Vincent Invasion's first album - Wattage's best tone.

The Axis of Justice booth had a small sign that said "Tom morello will be signing autographs at xx:xx". It was such a small sign, almost no one saw it. I did :laugh2:

I missed half of Queens of the Stone Age and most of Incubus, but hell, I didn't care

Sh*t! I was too busy watching Incubus! I know I should've gone to the Axis of Justice tent! Curses!

The QOTSA part of the show sucked @$$, so trust me when I tell you that you didn't miss anything...or, here it did anyway...

Metallica- master of puppets...ive been on a quest for this tone since i started playing, just my favorite of all time

Metallica- garage days re-revisited...not many people are aware of how much this tone kicks ass, but its got a great thick & raw element to it

megadeth- rude awakening...my 2nd favorite tone ever. mustaine just sounds amazing

down- both albums got a killer thick badass tone

CoC- deliverance...theres some amazing tones on here. some similar to down (see above), and some are way different and just really beautiful sounding like on 7 days it sends chills down yer spine

iron maiden- rock in rio...maiden's just classic, and i have a thing for live albums with good tone

pantera- cowboys from hell...most metal fans wanna sound like dimebag at one time or another. unique.

BLS- stronger than death...classic zakk

anthrax- we've come for you all...badass heavy tone, but can cover a lotta ground


about half of these bands use duncans...killer.

Joe Satriani - Flying In a Blue Dream; The tones on this album were the first ones what really made me flip out... their just so WEIRD. I'd never heard anything like that before and his playing helped it create such an otherworldy vibe. Soem people would criticize it as being weak or thin or overprocessed and in some spots I might agree with them but it's just that weird howling, smooth, singing, vocality in the midrange that freaks me out and tickles my ears.

Eric Johnson, Hot Licks Videos - He goes thru all of his best sounds on this wonderful video... that 1,000-lb violin tone from his Marshall Plexis, the dirty sweet grind of the Dumble and that angelic shimmering, sparkling clean from the Twins. After I heard him there was a period for about a year or so that I kept my chorus and delay on ALL THE TIME. lol...

Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets and the 1st G3 record I think his tone was at its best on these two recordings. The combination of the Jems and Bogners really made a wonderful medium for all of Vai's wacked-out dynamics and style to come through. Liquid smooth, hot, agressive, and powerful.

Jimi Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary, Re House - Pure Vintage Voodoo with a Strat as the proverbial doll. Need I say more?

DLR-Era Van Halen While I do like the tones on F.U.C.K. a lot, the DLR days i feel were Van Halen's tonal best. My favorite kind of distortion is a Strat-type into a loud hot Marshall and I think Eddie got pretty close to perfect with it on his first tries. The sound SNARLS as well as screams. It's like... controlled burning.

Mark Knopfler - anything he's ever done will do fine here. I love that out-of-phase compressed strat tone in a lot of different contexts but IMO Mark really gets the best sound for it. A Strat into a clean fender with a little bit of reverb and compression (I like a tad of dirtiness and some delay with it too) is such a wonderfully expressive sound. I use it to get myself out of ruts.

Dave Gilmour on The Wall - Really wide and expansive and huge. combine that with his wonderful phrasing abilities and you're filling up a LOT of room. Thats all i can say.

Billy Gibbons - Cheap Sunglasses - One of those "holy-crap-how-do-I-get-that-sound" moments on the solo. WOO!!!

Joe Bonamassa - Had To Cry Today - HOT HOT HOT HOT!!! If you haven't heard this yet, you must. Awesome sounds!

SRV - Lenny Natural classic beautiful tone. This is what you wish Strats and Fenders would sound like but rarely do.

Pantera - Mouth For War - It's like a sledgehammer with speakers!

Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey and Attack! - Another good example of a man-i-wish-i-sounded-like-that moment. Sometimes I wish he played slower a lot more as it would give me more time to enjoy his vibrato and superb tone.

I was kind of into COC for a little while ("Albatross", "Clean my Wounds", etc.,), then picked up America's Volume Dealer because the riff in "Congratulations Song" was so bad@$$ [and also because DOWN II had just come out], and then after that I raided my brothers CD collection to listen to Deliverance and Wiseblood. That thick wall of sound Keenan and Weatherman create is just astonishing, and both are highly underrated players.
I heard they were in the studio, but I don't really know the low down on any details. Care to fill me in?

Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley, just the biggest, heaviest sludgey tones ever committed to disk, IMO.

AFI - Sing the Sorrow, one of the few bands using Mesa Rectifiers properly.

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command, some of the most intense, in your face cutting yet huge tones.

Fu Manchu - Go For It Live, just so damn loud and rockin!
Alice in Chains - Dirt, the double tracked guitars with wah just sound thick as anything.

The Melvins - anything. Thicker than wading through treacle.

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish/Siamese Dream/Melloncollie, great clean tones and heavy fuzz tones to out fuzz all others.

Clapton on the Beano Album.. It was what awakend me musically. Raw... pure.. Every note oozed emotion.

Hendrix.... Castles made of sand.. The wind cries MAry.... All Along the Watchtower

SRV ...... Soul to Soul, I don't feel it was his best work, but I do feel it was his best tone.

B.B. King....... What can you say he is 79 years young and can still cut you to the bone with one note!

T Bone Walker...... He was the guy that influenced B.B. King..... How cool is that!

Try scooping at 300hz-400hz and leaving 800hz and above.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood This is the definition of Texas Roadhouse blues tone.
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced Fuzz tone deluxe.
Cream - Wheels of Fire British blues' finest hour.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping Southern rock served up with a healthy dose of three rock guitar masters.
Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach Slides and riffs the way god meant it to sound.
Pink Floyd - Animals Gilmor and Waters meld shimmering cleans with some funky blues crunch. Yummy!
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II The epitome of '70s hard rock tone and Page's masterful production set the benchmark for the next generation of rock and rollers.
AC/DC - Highway to Hell Pure party rock and roll tone. The Young brothers at their best

Van Halen Fair Warning: Thick horn-like mids, yet tons of highs and sparkle. I don't know how he does it, but that was one of the best sounds ever.

Husker Du: Wonderful thick fuzz, but enough clarity to hear the complex chording and drone notes.

Jay Farrar/Son Volt: I fell in love with that overdrive and edge-of-breakup sound (some songs are heavily over driven, some not). Woody and sometimes twangy, it's pure and raw. Insipired me to make a swamp ash twangbanger equiped strat (for that tele sound, but I prefer the comformt of a strat) and a Gibson Les Paul SG special (with low-output 490t bridge pickup, but that will probably be replaced with a Seth).

The first major one for me was the outro of Seek and Destroy (Metallica). It's just so.. raw and crunchy. guh guh guh guh chug.

A more recent discovery was Jimmy Page's live tone ~1970. The Tele + fuzz + whatever amp is just so damn ... thick and wooly.
