Here is the backing track: https://soundcloud.com/kamandasd/sd-solo-contest-1-am-2

It's a simple hard rock backing track in Am. Let's see what you got!

Also for those interested:

Guitar: Squier Standard Fat Strat with SD Custom8/'59 (it's my only axe currently in standard)
Bass: 80's BC Rich NJ Eagle with SD SPB-3's
AMP: BIAS FX - Basically a TubeScreamer into an 800 with a little delay
Interface: RME FF800
Drums: EZ Drummer 2 Rock! Expansion

OP:

I remember YEARS ago we had something like this. Think it would be neat to hear everyone's flavour over the same backing.

I'm willing to make a backing track for this and I'll see if I have anything useful to give as some sort of prize? I was thinking some sort of midtempo hard rock style thing so that a wide variety of styles can go over top. If anyone's got any ideas on certain progressions then let me know. Key would be a guitar friendly one too...A or E.

So let me know what you guys think, anybody down?

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

Busy weekend this weekend but I'll see if I can cobble something together for next week. Yeah I had a look and nothing much I can really offer for prizes (either too small or too big)...so it may just be for the glory!

Hi!
I like this idea, sometimes I miss something that I can solo for, being busy with these "Driver 2" covers :D

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

I am always down for some recording; count me in! (Even though I am not a strong soloist)

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

Awesome! Sorry guys life got in the way there for a bit. Hopefully make something up this weekend!

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

last year i was playing a chord progression, a ballad, at guitar center and some guy was noodling off it on the other side of the room. blah! jk

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

Will this be a complete backing track including drums to which we are just adding lead guitars? Or will you provide stems in case we want to change the backing riff or bass guitar?

I think the idea was simply do soloing over the backing track Kamanda puts together? You may be overthinking this.

I may participate if I have time. If just to show everyone how not to play lead :D

Given that my lead style is more along the lines of a metal Neil Young, I think that I'll beat you to the bottom.

Sounds like fun… I’m in! [emoji1303]

Although, to be honest, I think the only ones I’ll be giving a competition to are Demanic and Jacew for the worst!

If I may, I’d like to make a suggestion. That each entry be accompanied by information for the entire signal chain, from guitar to recording device… to include guitar woods, pickups, pedals, amps, mics, etc. Not to be judged, but it would be nice to be able to know this info if we hear a tone we like along way.

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

Yeah I was going to make a full backing track (drums bass guitar) and have everyone just rip over it. Nothing too long either <1min. I'll probably have a two bar build up or something then go! I'll keep the backing as simple as possible and mid-tempo to allow for more freedom. But hey, if you want stems then by all means, sure.

BriGuy - Great idea on having to post your chain.

And I say 'contest' but its more just to see everyone's interpretation of the same thing

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

****. I can only record on my iPhone. I don’t have my home rig anymore. Anybody think of a way I could still get in on this?

Re: A little friendly solo contest?

Do it with your iphone then! You can probably get a free 4 track app too and it will be alright.

So I did up the backing track this weekend, hopefully upload it tonight. It's nothing special, just a straight up hard rock in A minor.
