A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

X-Files Duckbucker
Hey Guys,

Ok so this one was actually purchased back at the end of December. Sorry that it has been way delayed, but I got caught up with other stuff. I purchased this from Musician's Friend during their Gibson 2013 Model-Year-End Clearance. Normally $2,300, I nabbed this bad-boy for $1,600!!! Seriously, A KILLER DEAL! It's a 2013 Gibson Les Paul Traditional! What really struck me as awesome about this model is that it has a solid-mahogany-body instead of a weight relieved one. And it is one heavy guitar too!

Here's why this is epic for me. When I first started playing guitar, I went into a local guitar shop at age 14 and they had this stunning translucent-dark-blue, flame-topped, Gibson Les Paul. I was in love! Naturally, lacking the means to purchase such an expensive instrument at the age of 14, it eventually was sold and I never saw it again. I always told myself that someday I would own a blue Les Paul. But in the last few years, that seemed less and less likely. Well, the sale came up, the model was appealing, and it came in Chicago Blue. A dream come true, my guitar loving brothers!

Before I bust out with the guitar porn, here are some mods I have done:
- Got a setup and a level-and-crown to really get great action
- Schaller Strap Locks
- Chrome Jack plate as I have a habit of damaging the plastic ones
- Replaced the Gibson 57 Classic Plus and Gibson 57 Classic with a '59/Custom Hybrid and a '59
- Replaces the stock pickups rings with Triple-Shots
- Replaced the 300k Linear Volumes with 500k Audio Tapers
- Replaced the tone pots with push/pulls for in/out-of-phase and parallel/series switching (still 500ks of course)
- Changed the stock 50's wiring to modern. This guitar has a brighter tone than anticipated so I like it better this way.

And now, ON WITH THE GUITAR PORN!

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

50's neck? 60's? fat, fast? nice lookin axe-ola
According to the Gibson site it's the "Late 50's" neck. I like the 60's better, but this seriously feels and plays sweet!

That's a beauty!! Love the blue.

What's the back look like?
It's the same transparent blue. It nice!

Dude, that is a seriously nice looking guitar. Congrats!

How are you liking the 59/C? I've had one in the bridge of my strat for the last year or so and it's awesome. I was just curious about how it sounds in an LP. I'm actually thinking about swapping the stock A5 for an A2. It's not so much that I've got a problem with the way it sounds now, but I recently swapped the A5 in my PG for an A8 and it made it so much better. I want that kind of tonal shift out of the 59/C but with less output than the stock A5.

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

That's gorgeous. Congratulations!

I didn't realize those models were non weight relieved. I thought they were swiss-cheesed.

Thanks! So far I dig the C/59. Still putting it through it's paces but its pretty solid. I had an A2P in the bridge but I wanted a little more heat and a slightly thicker sound. So far the C/59 is what I was looking for. Firmer bass but not too much heat. Plus it matches nicely with the '59 in the neck. I just have the stock A5 in it right now.

Yup, these are solid through and through. Great sustain! But when I sit and play it's a bit butt-heavy. It always feels like it's trying to tip off my lap to the right. Never had that before! But I defiantly like the sound.

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

It's better if they're butt-heavy than neck heavy. The thumb cutters are a nice touch. I like that they come stock now!

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

Love the blue! Next up for me would be a tone pros bridge and top wrap that tail piece!

I think it's pretty cool to have that early lust finally satisfied. This is a guitar you should never sell. Tweak the heck out of it if you want, let it sit idle at times when a new guitar grabs your attention, but a lifelong wish list item, never sell. Ever!

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

Nice axe! Glad to see someone making use of the Triple Shots. Push/pull phase switching too! I am wondering though, why the push/pull series/parallel? It seems like it would be redundant.

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

Those triple shots look a lot more subtle than I was thinking. Might have to grab myself a pair now...

Originally I did the series/parallel because j had never tried it. But when the pickups are put out of phase, the volume has a noticeable drop. When you then pull the switch to put them in-series, the volume returns to normal. So in the end it has become a useful way of keeping my volume up when using the phase switch! :smokin:

Re: A NGD that is EPIC for Me!

HOLY smokes!! NICE!! I had a 2013 "2008" model that was chicago blue and much like that, and put those knobs on it . but I sold it cuz I needed the money. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the color!!! Congrats!!
