My brother Bruce is one of the world's great amp techs...
My old '66 blackface Deluxe Reverb, the best DR I've ever owned, is one of those that's seen hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of playing time and looks it!
It's not to bad looking but it does have changed grill cloth, some rust, etc. I keep it in perfect operating condition though and like my other DR, it has an older Celestion G12H30 in it.
I've compared it to quite a few better looking old DR's and it has a richer tone than any I've compared it to.
Recently it started blowing fuses. I changed out the NOS RCA 6V6 tubes (usually the cause is a bad output tube) but it kept blowing fuses.
So I gave it to Bruce and he called to give me the sad news: a shorted and unrepairable power transformer.
But he also had some good news: he also thought my '66 DR was the best sounding DR on the planet so a couple of years ago he had a bunch of transformers made to the exact specs of the particular transformers in my particular amp! He'd already made measurements of my particular trannies, had them cloned, and he's been using them anytime he needs to replace a tranny in a Deluxe Reverb.
He installed one of those and the amp sounds better than ever. I mean it.
I have a near mint '66 DR that also sounds great...but this old beater DR of mine sounds even better. A truly magical one of a kind amp.
Anyways: Bruce is the man! http://www.missionamps.com
