My brother Bruce is one of the world's great amp techs...

My old '66 blackface Deluxe Reverb, the best DR I've ever owned, is one of those that's seen hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of playing time and looks it! :) It's not to bad looking but it does have changed grill cloth, some rust, etc. I keep it in perfect operating condition though and like my other DR, it has an older Celestion G12H30 in it.

I've compared it to quite a few better looking old DR's and it has a richer tone than any I've compared it to.

Recently it started blowing fuses. I changed out the NOS RCA 6V6 tubes (usually the cause is a bad output tube) but it kept blowing fuses.

So I gave it to Bruce and he called to give me the sad news: a shorted and unrepairable power transformer.

But he also had some good news: he also thought my '66 DR was the best sounding DR on the planet so a couple of years ago he had a bunch of transformers made to the exact specs of the particular transformers in my particular amp! He'd already made measurements of my particular trannies, had them cloned, and he's been using them anytime he needs to replace a tranny in a Deluxe Reverb.

He installed one of those and the amp sounds better than ever. I mean it.

I have a near mint '66 DR that also sounds great...but this old beater DR of mine sounds even better. A truly magical one of a kind amp.

Anyways: Bruce is the man! http://www.missionamps.com

I second the recommendation for Bruce. He's a great guy.

Re: A plug for my brother...

His website just made my bookmarks...always good to have the website of such a great amp tech on hand ya know? makes me almost unafraid to buy the 1970 Super Reverb I"ve been staring at...and with the insurance money coming to replace my Vox....it might be at the top of my list right now

Bruce is certainly one of the most knowledgeable guys I know regarding amps, and specifically transformers.

Lew, I think the OT on my '56 Deluxe is a DR tranny, but a good one :)
I have the original, but it needs rewinding, and the replacement sounds good to me. I know I talked to Bruce about this, and he said I had a good one.

So Lew, are you saying that one could improve the tone of an amp by playing the living s#$@ out of it? That's what i like to hear!

It's also a great shame that there aren't great techs like your bro in every major city. Down here in Miami all we have is Señor stereo techs, and a couple of old farts that swear by vintage so much that they would stuff an amp with old filter caps just because they were vintage. When my Bandmaster was 'serviced' by the local tech, he put 40 year old Astron caps in it, and i pray that my amp doesn't melt down every time i fire it up. It's so bad that i'm thinking of reading up and doing the cap replacement myself (i know how to drain them so don't flip out! heh :smokin: )

yer kidding right? i thought putting in them vintage things was at the sutomers request only? a tech would want the repair to last at least a decent amount of time.... odd to say the least.

Here's to Bruce:beerchug:

Turned me on to great speakers, which he helped develop....

Re: A plug for my brother...

Bruce is an extremely busy guy although I've tried to get him to post here more often. He is a member, as Christian noted. Bruce tends to hang out more on the techie forums like Ampage. Those forum bore me to tears but that's because I'm a guitar player...not a tech head. Like alot of great techs (Randall Smith comes to mind) Bruce has been technically oriented all his life and used to build race cars in the 60's! He held some records at the Detroit Drag Way for awhile. He's also a terrific drummer and we played together in alot of bands back in my gigging days in Detroit. Lew

Talk to Jeff Seal on here, he's gonna do a good lookover on my '66 Bandmaster. I've heard good things about his work.

Jeff does great work.

I've heard nothing but raves about both Jeff's and Scott's work! Love to try one of those Matchless inspired amps Scott's been working on.

Re: A plug for my brother...

Bruce taught me a lot in how to keep things quiet inside an amp just from that Tweed Deluxe kit. It wasn't in words, but in pictures. If you look at the photos, the way the leads are run, the way the heater wires are tucked into the edge, just lots of little stuff. Made that 5E3 kit even a better deal.

Then the absolute wealth of information on those forums that bore Lew to tears... there is so much out there if you're willing to invest the time to learn stuff.

Then there's Jeff Seal who is a prince of a guy for listening to my stupid questions and helping me understand weird stuff.

You're obviously a humble student because the 1st thing I notice when I fire up the Edana is how silent it is....again, not quiet but SILENT !!!!
