A shout out for Crates

I have a "real" Crate guitar amp and a Crate practice amp for guitar and a Crate practice amp for bass. I'm fairly impressed. Do you have experience with Crate amps and, if so, what are your thoughts. My "real" Crate is 2 speakers and can literally implode my condo building and has a ton of settings. I like it so much that I'm going to auction my mid '70s Fender Super Reverb.

I have a Crate Vintage Club V18... it ain't perfect, but for what I want it to do, it fits the bill to a 't'.

Re: A shout out for Crates

I kinda keep my eyes peeled for one of the vintage ones from the 90s. I dig the tone of that line - warm, lotsa mids.

That "real" enough???

Re: A shout out for Crates

I currently have a GT65.

I had a GT-1200H, GFX-1200H, and a MX212.

As far as solid state goes, I love me some Crates. And VERY underrated!!! I can only hope that St. Louis Music comes back up and buys them back.

Re: A shout out for Crates

When it's time to bring on the death metal, only the GX-130 will suffice.

I have huge GAS for a Crate Cr-II. I played through one in the 80's and fell in love with it. I would love to get another one.

Love my crate bt350 head. Built in chorus, fancy eq, even a bit of overdrive. Very underrated

Re: A shout out for Crates

I've got a BV120H with 4x12 cab & a BV6212... Not the best for dependability, but when they're working, I love them. Very nice clean, and a super tight distortion.

But I don't play them often. I've also got a Mesa .50 cal that I play through the 4x12 more often than not. I also have a Vintage Modern 2466, with 425a & a JMP 2203. I play the Marshalls more than my other amps. Just because. It's not worth selling the Blue Voodoos, they mean more to me than the pittance I can get for them.

What's frightening about the BV120???

Great amp.

I'm glad you said that brother. I once played a Blue Voodoo for a battle of the band's that the local music shop sponsored and supplied all the gear for so it was 'fair' and everyone used the same gear. It was a few years ago (06 I think) and I remember it being easy to dial in and had a nice musical distortion. Almost like a well behaved 5150 that would politely ask you if she could **** your girlfriend instead of just doing it when you popped out to get some milk.

Re: A shout out for Crates

Dave Mustaine did a couple of tours and albums with the Blue Voodoo. Sammy HAgar had one with active tone (Red Voodoo).

I was gassing hard for one for a few years. I'd get one now on the cheap if I had a reason.

Re: A shout out for Crates

I remember seeing the ads in Guitar World and Guitar One with Marty Friedman in the late 90s/00s but never knew Mustaine used them. Cool. I seem to remember CC Deville in a Blue Voodoo ad too at some point. Over here when they pop up they go for about £150. Think a half stack went for £200 last year on the bay!

Re: A shout out for Crates

You have to watch those "V" series amps & heads, if they're the newer ones built by LOUD tachnologies / Mackie they don't even use a power transformer. They use a solid state switching mode power supply, kinda like a computer power supply. And if/when they go out on ya, LOUD / Mackie basically tell you to throw it away. The will NOT repair it even if you pay them, and they won't sell you a new one either. I had a blown one in a V100 I bought blown, thinking I could repair it. I got real ticked off at those people over that !!!! Mine got toasted when an EL34 tube shorted in it.

Re: A shout out for Crates

I had no idea Crates were actually worth taking seriously. I played a couple of really crappy sounding ones back in the late '80s/early '90s, and have ignored them ever since. Now I know to pay more attention on Craigslist. Thanks!

Re: A shout out for Crates

My little V Series V1512. Great little practice amp. It is one of the "made in USA" Crate/ST Louis amps.

Re: A shout out for Crates

I've got an FX65 which is okay, but nothing to brag about. Served me pretty well for several years, but I've upgraded now.

However, I have a real nice little BX-25 bass amp that sounds amazing for such a little fella! I only play bass for home recording or the occasional church service, but it gets me through quite nicely!
