A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
Finally got a chance to shoot out the 3 alnico 8 pups.

The test beds:
Crazy 8 in a Charvel 4
Alternative 8 in a Charvel 4
Custom 8 in a Kramer Focus 6000

I tried to make as level a playing field as possible.
I used my Peavey Ultra plus half stack so I could test under Ultra/Crunch and Clean.

Let me first say, this was fun.. These are 3 GREAT pickups!!!
And ALL will stay right where they are..

The similarities first:
I find they all have great note separation, even under high gain. Plus, if you slam a big chord and then pick notes under it, the notes come thru. NICE!!

The Eqs on all are similar. And are pretty level. There is no mid hump (like a CC) or big lows or anything. So you have more control with your amp or outward EQ.

All have chunky lows without any flab, present highs with no piercing.

They are all very expressive and sensitive to picking dynamics.

They all respond to clean up noticably when the volume is rolled down.

Now the differences:
I find this quite simple... Its basically 3 flavors but its all ice Cream.. (same ingredients listed above)

The Crazy 8 is more distortion flavor. Has more sizzle (NOT fizzy) and more cutting prescence. This is the best choice for players that like the Distortion type pups. This would be the last choice to use clean

The Custom 8 is more PAF/Vintage Flavor. Has a bit of a "squishy" attack with note bloom. This one I could just slam an A chord and hear the tubes clip. This would be the one to use if you want to occasionly cop a brown type of tone. ( NO, its not Brown sound pup!) Im just saying in has that paf natural tone.. This has the warmest clean.

The Alternative 8 is more crisp flavor. This is clean and prescise, but NOT sterile in any way.. Big, present sound all thru the range. This one would be great for guys who use lots of effects and this would probably be preferred by players who like Dimarzios.
Plenty of presence and tone , but very clear. Sounds good clean.

All in all, they are all great.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE em! And honestly think that if I had just 3 pups to choose from, Id be happy with these and can put whatever would suit the guitar. More distorted sound, vibey or clear for effects. Honesty, I think Ill prob buy Custom 8s and Alt 8s going forward.. They really are good. Thank You Seymour!!

Disclaimer.. I am not an authority, these are my opinions.. If anyone who has played any of the above have info to add, please feel free. I was going back and forth for about 2 hours.. Id prefer to have spent a day and made some tapes, but time didnt permit. Thanks!
Hope this is helpful!!

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Great Review - Nice comments! Thank you!
I can support you in the case of the Custom 8 (the only one i have). A JB 8 should be in the realm of the Crazy 8 - judging from you comments- but the cleans are more usable.

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Thanks for the comparison BR...the Custom 8 interests me the most of these, but I have friends that would be all over a crazy 8 in a heartbeat, from your description.

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

I for one that have played the Crazy 8, well, like crazy can attest that your descriptions are as accurate as could be.
Also, if this is the one with the lest useful cleans then, can't wait to hear the other two.
I think that the Crazy 8's cleans were very nice.

BUT, I also concur that it is a Distortion-type pickup!!!

Great review man.

Now the question.
Which of the three would you say fits best to a Floyd SuperStrat guitar which has plenty of bass but way more mids and highs?

(Yeah, it's the Swing I'm talking about, honestly, I can't for the life of me understand why manufacturers haven't used Ebony for a top before, LOVE IT!)

Hmm.. None of them are big bottom pups.. (like tone zone) But they all have great Chunk in the lows. It really depends on if you want a crisper sound or a more spongy attack.. I LOVE the Custom 8 in my Kramer and just made one and installed in one of my Salas' (mahog/mahog, short scale, floyd) and it is awesome in there too!

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Well, for this one definition is everything.
I want a good low-end but I primarily want it to get by with more sonically complex passages, like you said, being able to strum a (power?) chord, then play some notes on top and have them come through! That's what this guitar excels at and that's where I want to focus on.

After that, my no.2 concern is to have enough chuga-chuga for riffing and palm mutes.
Not loose or boomy lows AT ALL (although I tend to believe that this guitar would make even the JB sound tight :p)

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Hmmmmm...getting me interested in some new mags......

Need another guitar!

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Updated info.

I did a rough recording test into a cassette player. Thru this medium, they all record well. But the Crazy 8 as the most cut, the alternative 8 again has the most clarity. Even going way too loud into the condenser mike and and outside mike, the string clarity still comes thru on all and the individual notes picked under heavy gain with a ringing chord. I just wish now I could run them in a band sitch..
These pups rule!!

One more thing... here are the players used in the shootout.. If anyone cares..

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Great thread . Thanks Bloodrose.
I've got a Crazy8 in my Soloist, which is good cause Im looking for a hotter sound from it, but i havent run it balls out yet. Definitly needs a good high powered single for the neck to match. Im looking for a SHR-1n.

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

How is the Alt 8 for classic rock through a versatile amp like an Egnater MOD 50? Why do they say this pickup is good for high gain amps??? I always thought high output pikcups were really designed for overdriving lower gain amps, essentially helping out low gain amps. I mean, look at the WRC Icebucker, it is like 9.8 or something. That thing is made for the dude from Iced earth. It all gets confusing.

I would love to hear the Alt 8 next to the WCR Ironman.

I tested all of them on both the crunch and ultra channels AND have played them on my PV classic 30. Sounds great for classic rock too..

The ALt 8 is great for high gain amps because of its clarity. You wont loose note definition and mush out. Its also a pickup that will drive the amp, but it sounds crisp and clear under heavy distortion. The note clarity is one thing that I really love about them all. But the Alt 8 is especially articulate
