A2 59 rockin clips with Da Plexi

Edit: Right after I posted, I looked again at what the thread title is: A2 59 rockin clips with Da Plexi. If these are just meant to be "clips" and not complete songs, you may want to ignore everything I posted past this point.

Hey Kevin; I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to be a bit more critical than the good folks who posted before me. ;)

From a purely technical point of view, they were, of course, outstanding. Great playing, great tone, excellent recording. Clearly better than anything that I could produce now, or am likely to in the future. And, if you were just a fellow forumite posting a clip, I'd tend to just say "Good jams!" and leave it at that.

But, I get the impression that this is actually a CD project that you're working on, possibly and probably, with the hopes of going commercial. From that point of view - there's just something missing. I just listened to all three, for the third time in a row, and to be honest, I'm struggling to put my finger on exactly what it is that's missing. But its something. Its almost as if each song is the "break" in another piece, like the main theme, or melody isn't there. For lack of a better term, I might say they lacked "the hook." But I hate to use the term "hook" because that implies some sugar-coated pop, which these aren't.

I could take a Jeff Beck album, that I hadn't listened to in years, play any track, and immediately identify what song I was listening to. And, each song would have its own character and theme. If I waited 15 minutes between listening to yours, I might think I was listening to the same song again. I wish I could be more specific about what it was that didn't touch me about these, but as I said, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Again, I really hope that I'm not beating you up too bad here, its just that these songs, and more importantly, you, clearly have the talent to go places, and produce some music. But you have to figure out a way to inject a bit of your own "mojo" into the song. There has to be something that says "Kevin Schaffer", rather than sounding like a practice session for some studio musicians.

BTW - If I'm the only one who feels this way, feel free to ignore me. :laugh2:
And one last thing, the song "Butter Face" has a filename of "Butterhead".

Take care buddy. Artie

Heh - want to leave on a positive note . . . your songs clearly answer the question of whether or not a 59 can rock! :32:

Forgot about those, totally killer stuff Kev!

Man Sucker Puch reminds me of Angel in parts. Kind of like a funked out early Angel tune, those keys are dead on Gregg Giuffria!

Sounds like I gotta get me some Angel. Do you have a recomendation? Very curious to check that out, sounds like I would love it.

Thanks again!!

Artie

First off thanks so much for taking the time to really dig in with your thoughts. Absolutely no hard feelings or offence taken. Art is always subjective and as a result it can never speak in a positive way to everyone ( hell I would love it if everyone loved it, but I get enough flop votes on Soundclick to known that simply is not the case). That is really the beauty of the whole thing, folks take it in different ways.

In terms of what I am trying to do... Hmmm ....I am very intentionally laying down extremely raw versions of these tunes. I really feel I spent too many years thinking to hard about the process and it really got in the way of actually enjoying being creative. I have not attempted instrumental rock since 1991 or so. I spent many years doing acoustic pop with female vocals, ala Lisa Loeb, Sheryl Crow ect... Very produced, kinda stiff pop tunes. After chasing that for too long I had to let go and get back to what made me want to play in the first place. For me it is loud guitars over hard groovin beats. I got a Plexi and it just opened a new door for me. Very freeing if you will. I let go of all my "thinking" and just wanted to cut loose, make some noise and see if I could still pull it off. I am laying just about all the tracks but drums and a few key parts, but I want it to sound like your hearing a group playing live, I love little flubs, not playing with clicks, first takes, and all the other stuff that makes rock so appealing to me. I realize there are themes I could delve into further, but this is much more about capturing the sometimes ugly moment and running with it. I have never done that before and am now embracing it completely. I have no idea what is going to happen with the disk, but the process of creating it has been just about the best musical step I have taken.

I defense of myself, of course Jeff Beck tunes are memorable!! LOL, he is one of the greatest guitarists in the history of the game. I can't even sniff that legacy, I would love to have cats like Hammer, Stanley Clarke, Cozey and on and on to collaborate with but that just ain't gonna happen. I do however love that era of music and wanted to try and capture that feel a bit, but this ain't no Wired lol....

So again absolutely no hard feelings, I feel very good about the response I have been getting, in fact I am shocked I have had 20.000 listeners and 3 #1 tunes on Soundclick out of thousands of tunes floating around there. It is an amazing reward for simply creating some ideas. I gotta run with what I dig doing and I truly feel I am in the right direction with this one. That disk is about all the mojo I can muster..... :)

Sincere regards,

Kevin

Listening to these clips, they're so good that I just had to bump. :)

I don't suppose you have clips of an alnico II 59 in the bridge of a gibson style guitar?

Sadly I did not have any Gibson types when I did those recordings.

Yes very good work , good feeling of Beck and fusion style .
I would like to note however two things :
* there is something true about the lack of theme , but it is not that bad cause the music is rich , but it'll just be even better .
** About the ton ; very good this 59 A2 but sometime i feel that it leaves you as regard sustain , and a bit loose on basses , very raw like alnico 2 .
I just thought you would be better with an alnico 8 in the 59 or a slighly more powerfull pickup like the Demon or JB ( of course ) .
Nice work , keep on !

Thanks for the thoughts, the feedback is appreciated. :)

If you here the entire CD vs a couple tracks, I think you will get more of a feel as to the how and why of how I created this music. It was very intentionally meant to be open, raw and off the cuff. Much of that due to the fact that I spent too much time thinking about creating and in essence, missing the 'moment' I was always chasing. Doing it this way was much more freeing creatively for me. I lived with what I got in the moment.

As far as output on pickups, I really want that low output reponse, I wasn't really going for a modern sound. Medium gain, eaking out the notes with my fingers. I like that loose, open jangly 70s sound. So it was very much a specific want vs something I settled for.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen and respond!!
