Ace Frehley Budokan

I have a Gibson Frehley Budokan, and I'd like to hook up the two dummy pickups (neck, middle) so that I have my Neck, Neck/Middle, and Bridge on my 3 way. Any schematics?

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

A real Budokan? I guess so since the pups are not wired. Pics or I'm not helping!!!!

The standard Gibson wiring is Neck is neck, Middle is Middle Plus Bridge, and Bridge is Bridge. You sure you want a Super D neck and middle together?

I played a Frehley model with the pups wired (not the real Budokan - Classic Custom version or whatever) and the Middle and bridge had a great rhythm sound. Don't know that neck and middle would be so cool with two Super D's though.

But the standard wiring wpuld be easy enough to mod - just bridge it to the neck instead of the bridge. Someone here will have it for you.

Assuming we get some pics!!!!

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

You could add the Page Custom 6 way selector. I think Stew Mac has em. That way you have any option you want.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

Are the wires ran through it? Just not connected??? How is it inside?

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

Ill post some tmro...
Its a Reissue, aged...it came with the Neck and Middle as dummies. Looks awesome...just wanna get those two pickups working!

Or would it be easy to wire all three pickups to be active in the middle position? Any schematics?

The Page 6 way needs some more routing under the cover for the switch to fit

Love it!

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

According to Gibson's page all of the pickups are Super D's and "And just like on Ace's guitar, the traditional 3-way toggle switch has been modified to only allow the use of the bridge pickup, allowing you to be able to accomplish one of Ace's most noted effects".

I don't know what they mean by "modified" but hopefully it means disconnected.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

you can get a 6 way rotary switch and wire it to have neck, neck/middle, middle, middle/bridge, bridge and neck/bridge. i'm doing this on a SG custom.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

I took a look at the toggle, its a strange toggle switch. it has a ground lug, then it only has 2 lugs, rather than the regular LP 3 ways. So I think this one that they put in it is a modified one to make it a kill switch. Does this sound right? I've never encountered this before.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

Sounds like you need a new toggle.

Why they would mod the toggle I don't know. Just leave the wires off. Meh - Gibson genius at work. Me - I just leave the wires off that I don't want.

Again - I don't know the official scheme, but it can't be that hard. Just wire the bidge to bridge/midle, the middle to middle only, and the neck to neck only, instead of neck and bridge both to the middle.

DAn Erlewine has a scheme in his book though for a version I'd prefer:

Neck and bridge wired as usual, with a master tone. Then, the other tone knob is used as a volume for the middle.

Then you get neck, bridge, or both, and can fade the middle in as you like with either or both. Middle only is both neck and bridge vol off in any posiiton.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

I got a Switchcraft 3 way toggle for a 3 bucker. Now I have to figure out what I should do. Its turning out to be a pain in the ass.

FYI- The toggle in the Gibson Ace is indeed modified for only working half. The prongs for the neck and middle are cut clean off. So it was easier to just order a new toggle.

Re: Ace Frehley Budokan

Hopefully a picture of the switch of my Budokan will help

Here's a picture of my Budokan for Aceman!

The Super Distortion IMO sounds great in all three positions, you just have to play with their height.
Aceman, you won't believe it but I've never used a Super Distortion before and now that I played one...OMG!!!
I think I finally found a passive pickup to replace all my active ones!
