Active pickup dilemma - some advice please

Re: Active pickup dilemma - some advice please

Thank you again. Will definitely keep the EMG-60 in mind, have seen other folks say that the 85 60 set up is a good one.
I will look into the 57/66 based on your recommendation.
Have reservations about Fluence because of demos I've heard and just the basic concept of stacked PCBs emulating a small conventional coil wind output and then the signal being manipulated to emulate some selected tone. Likely have this all wrong but bottom line not ready for such a radical technology just yet.

Re: Active pickup dilemma - some advice please

Ive had a few guitars with EMGs. I used them for really crunchy high gain applications. One was an SG '61 RI that I had an 85 / 85 setup in and another was an ESP M-II with 81/81. I had a Universe 7 string about 15 years ago that I put EMGs in as well. I remember having to do some routing of the guitar pickup cavity on some of those jobs. This was a period in my life when I had too many guitars and about half of them were constantly being tinkered with. I eventually sold and or traded those guitars and never bought another guitar with actives. I decided I could do what I wanted with passive pickups.

How was it? Did it sound better than the blazes? The blazes have such scooped mids it keeps it incompatible with the rig when I am using the rest of guitars as well.

not a fan of the original DiMarzio Blaze for the same reason. moved on to the Blaze Custom and it addresses the main issues with the original Blaze. The Titan 7 and the Ionizer 7 have been some interesting options that I've considered. EMGs are a fine product, but just not suited for my goals.

Unfortunately I don't the see blaze custom being in production, also I am equally worried about the neck pickup suffering from the same characteristics.
How about the evolution? This one comes in green as well :)

It is. Grabbed a new one not long ago. Sorta have to find a place like banjomike. Or a retailer that will place the order for you. Good thing is that pretty much all DiMarzio pickups are production models and the only price difference come with bobbin or pole piece colors.

Not tried the Evo. Maybe I should. Seems that I've not found many people that do use them and it can be hard to tell what they can do when you listen to Vai's tone.
