Adding push pull for phase between pickups.

Hi all,

I have just added a SD Jazz neck and SD P-rail bridge to my PRS SE Zach Myers. These are the best neck and bridge pickups in my opinion and for the music I play. They suit the guitar really well except for the middle postion, which sounds thinned out, ie out of phase (?).

My controls are as follows.... Neck pup goes to 3 way on-on-on switch, giving parallel, series and slug. Bridge pup again goes to 3 way on-on-on switch giving parallel, series and p90. Output leads go direct to three way toggle then on to master tone and bass roll off. This is what I wanted and on their own each pup sounds great.

I do not wish to loose the thinner sound in the middle position, great in some applications but I would prefer the fatter (in phase?) sound in the middle postion as the default. So I figure I need a push pull (tone) pot to switch phase. I have SD wiring diagrams which I have and will follow.

Q1 Only one pup needs to be switched so which one neck or bridge?

Q2 Phase switch comes after on-on-on switch ?

Q3 Will there be any issues regarding grounding, considering the bare wire is include in the on-on-on switch, with phase reversal this would be 'included' with the now hot lead.

Q4 Would it be best to take the bare lead to ground first and not the on-on-on switch, therefore avoiding any potential grounding issues.

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this one.

Thanks, Mike

Re: Adding push pull for phase between pickups.

Q1- either one. Jazz might be easier.

Q2- Send the Jazz to Phase switch before your main switch

Q3-your bare wire is your shield. as long as it goes to ground somewhere you are fine. The phase switch will just flip the Black and Green wires on a Duncan

Q4- Refer to answer for Q3

Wait i just reread your post

Q2- do phase switch after the On-On-On. So your +and - from the output of the Jazz or P-rail On-On-On will be used for inverting phase.

Sorry for jumping the gun.

Re: Adding push pull for phase between pickups.

Also, you don't have a wiring for just the Rail coil on the P-Rail? Is the Rail not a good tone? Maybe too bright at the bridge?

Re: Adding push pull for phase between pickups.

Thanks audiocheck,
I can't say that the rail option is not a good option, it's just that I really wanted series parallel and p90, not to worried with the rail. I toyed with the idea of using triple shots but they don't really fit the flat top ie not angled, the angled LP style are curved so also a non starter.

Your second post regarding Q2 .You're right I was going to place phase switch after the on-on-on switch. But having that bare wire wire in the negative side means I would effectively be lifting the ground when engaging the phase reversal. I just wondered if this would cause issues ie making the pickup metal 'live' or creating an earth loop.

Thanks, Mike

No No the bare wire is your shield and needs to go to ground somewhere. So is it is being used with the green on the On On On switch? If so put the bare wire to a grounded pot. Then the hot and negative leads off of the On On ON switch will be what goes to the (DPDT) Phase switch.

Re: Adding push pull for phase between pickups.

Yes we're on the same page here. I'll put the phase switch after the on-on-on switch and take the bare cable to the back of a pot.

cheers audiocheck
