African mahogany vs. honduran mahogany

Re: African mahogany vs. honduran mahogany

Hmm... If I'm correct, mahogany from Honduras is a (tad?) "better" tone wood than African.

Honduras mahogany is known as the ultimate tone wood for a Les Paul, vintage ones were built with that wood.

African Mahogany is known to be heavier, densier, and cheaper! Gibson use African M. almost exclusively on all their guitars, the lightest planks (10%) going directly to the Custom Shop division, and that explains why they use weight-relief holes in their standard production line.

Personaly, I havent tried both so I wont comment. And I dont think I could hear any difference. :blackeye:

I've read that today, a lot of "Honduran" mahogany actually comes from Brazil.... does this mean that we have to have two or three times as many posts about mahogny vs korina now?:)

I dont know how are the supplies from south/middle america... with all those things going on there, Amazonian Forest being menaced ... with this in mind, I'd choose African over Honduras anytime.

Re: African mahogany vs. honduran mahogany

IIRC There was a huge rain flood in Honduras a few years back and after that the price of thier mahogany went through the roof.

Re: African mahogany vs. honduran mahogany

From first-hand experience, I can tell you that African Mahogony is heavier, brighter and not as full sounding as Central/South American Mahogony. I prefer the Central/South American mahogony to the African, it just sounds so much better to my ears.

Cheers,

Korina is Gibson's name for Limba.

Re: African mahogany vs. honduran mahogany

I was in Guatemala recently and a tour guide was talking about the national tree, Ceba. He also said that their Guatemalan mahogany was a) protected species nowadays (after the end of their civil war a few years ago. I know this isn't Honduras but it is a close by.
