Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

STRATDELUXER97

Stratoblaster Tone Meister
Went back in...Put the black wire over to the switch, white to ground, baseplate ground wire was moved over to the white side also..

I now have proper phase in the 4th position...Still seem to get the best balance with my middle and neck surfers by having the TB adjusted to 3/32" on both E strings with both strings depressed at the highest frets...

This pickup is very cool...It has some good lowend balls, more mids..The mids are nice and cutting and the pickup is pretty present but not shrill or ice picky...It's amazing how articulate this pickup is also, but yet it grows some teeth if you dig in hard..The 4th position is slightly lacking in giving that nice vintage tone I got with the Surfer bridge in that the mids dominate that position a bit..You still get quack but it's not with the highs being as dominant and the tone is beefier..I notice I can fix this tone just by bringing my volume down a bit on my guitar or I'll bring my middle pickup down a bit more...This pickup is pretty loud and I ended up bringing my neck pickup up a bit more to get a better volume balance...Doesn't take much to drive an amp when you dig in but yet you still retain alot of note clarity..I remember Jeremy and Lew stating something pretty similar to my findings? You can volume down on your guitar and get squeeky clean strat bridge tones...Turn the volume up to 10 and you get clean, loud, fullness of tone due to the way the lows and mids work together but still with plenty of highend jangle...I still have to throttle my master tone control back just a bit to take some of the presence away from ripping my face off! :burnout: I love mixing the Blender pot with this pickup, but it isn't as necessary as it was with the thinner sounding Surfer in the bridge...I Like the Surfer but the TB looks like it will serve my styles better...

This pickup is fairly aggressive(In a Tele way) I guess? It's the mids and the output and aggression that sets it apart from just another stock bridge pickup in a strat...A real nice mixture of vintage presence and jangle with the midrange bite and chunk, and more output of a good Tele pickup...I Like it already..Very cool pickup indeed....Thanks again to MRID for the great price on a great sounding pickup...

cool John......how is it with cleans? maybe some good strong surf tones through my twin reverb with the reverb dimed?......... i think this is the pickup i want for the bridge position.....

and i will be able to fix any phasing problems i might have with the stock fender middle pickup fairly easily if needed?

I guess you could do "surf" with this pickup, but it's ballsier and more aggressive than the Surfer or the Texas Hot,especially in it's mids...This pickup rubs up with the vibe of some humbuckers even...If you are at all familiar with why people prefer a Tele's bridge pickup to a strat's,then you'll dig this pickup...I own 2 Teles and I am relating...It's a marriage between great strat tone and the tone of a Tele bridge pickup...It's not perfect, but it's a workable tone..I really like this pickup..The price was really great on it also..Not sure on your strat's middle pickup and how that'll work out though?

This pickup has nice full sounding clean tones with plenty of presence in the highs and more mids..The mids aren't obnoxious but it does make the pickup seem pretty strong in it's tone..The lows and highs are balanced nice, but I feel the lows are stronger than the Surfer and Texas Hot bridge pickups..

Re: Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

well my middle pickup is just a normal south polarity strat middle pickup.... i know its now RWRP cause theres hum in all positions of this strat.........so all three stock pickups are south polarity....... will i be able to get the twangbanger to match up correctly in some way or another?

More than likely your original early 80's strat middle pickup isn't rwrp...That is the reason you currently have hum in all positions...The rwrp middle pickup didn't start until around 87 or so...Still not sure why it wouldn't work? You may have to do like I did today with my TB and flip flop 2 wires...Worth a try..

Re: Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

well im sure i can get it to work one way another...but worst case scenario would be that i wouldnt have the bridge+middle position right? thats not my fav sound on the strat anyways, so no big deal really......by the way, what would it sound like if they were out of phase? totally unusable?

Out of phase is horrible...Thin,low output, very vowel like hollow type of sound, shrill, and you know something is just wrong right away...It's like WTF!? :smack: :32:

Get the Twangbanger and see if it works with your other pickup...If not,go with more Duncan pickups..What's the downside? :)

Re: Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

so what is the magnetic polarity of the twangbanger from your findings? scott miller told me it was south.......

Re: Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

A couple weeks ago, I tossed a Twangbanger into my Strat, it's such a good pickup!

Re: Ahhhh See Now This Twangbanger Is Really Great!

Hmmm.....let's see all the pickups John has made me start GASing for.
Twangbanger
Tx Hot's
Surfers

that's about 470 bucks worth of pickups right there. Thanks man. :D

You do that to your used pickups too....right? Someone else uses them right handed and then you turn 'em around and wear 'em out from the other direction! :laugh2:

I just did a little test for you guys:

I opened up some boxes of brand new APS-1, SSL-1, TWANGBANGER and Antiquity Strat pickups (Just got a HUGE shipment in!) and held the TWANGBANGER poles against the poles of the other pickups.

Reverse polarity will attract...same polarity will repel.

The only ones the TWANGBANGER had the polarity reversed with was the Antiquitys.

The TWANGBANGER should be just fine with: SSL-1, SSL-2, SSL-5, APS-1, APS-2 and I would guess all of the "standard" Duncan single coils.

But it's reversed (polarity wise) with the Antiquitys.

I'm glad you like it! I would have kept it myself if I had a strat to put it in! :laugh2:

Lew....Figures I have to be the one to run into a problem....It's all fine now though after switching the hot and ground wires and the plate ground on the TB..I Like this pickup alot...The blender pot has really grown on me also...I feel like I have something special and something none of the other players around me have...It's our secret though.. :13:

Lew....Also..Check to see if the TB has lower staggered poles? Mine sit inside the pickup cover more than my Surfer and other Duncan single coils..Especially my 1st string E pole? Weird...It's not effecting the tone or balance, but cosmetically it kinda bothers me... :32:

No problem like that with any of the new Twangbangers...they're all slightly raised in a gentle arch. I checked all six that just came in. Don't know why the Twangbanger you got from MRID is the way it is. Just IS I guess! :)

lew...I'll bet when I "lightly" clamped the plate it might have pushed some poles down a bit? The high E pole is lower than the middle poles and I don't see how I could've pushed just that pole down without effecting the higher ones? Oh well..No big deal I Guess? Still a great pickup..
