My favorite for riduculous so far is MXR!
there are at least 4 versions of the script phase 90!
talk about a money maker

And yet the pedal that I see on everybody's board is the EVH Phase 90. LOL

I love my EVH Phase 90! Way better than the stock MXR Phase 90, can't speak for the other versions

of course. how can you sound like VH-I or VH-II if you don't have the box with his name on it? or the 5150 amp that he wasn't using in the 70s? or the wolfgang guitar and frankenstein pup? lol! I've seen guys nail the VH tone with a poplar guitar and a JB, but let's put a few more bucks in Ed's wallet so that KISS isn't the only act from the 70s ripping off the fans. lol!

I do have to say that particular pedal is a pretty decent deal, and costs less than some of the script Phase 90 versions.

I saw one in my local Sam Ash for $79 used... Should've jumped on it.

Getting vintage VH tones is not THAT hard, I dunno why people try to make out like it is. I think it's more in the amp than in the guitar anyways.

I had a FRED in the bridge slot of my Music Man for a few years and if I dialed in the amp right I got great VH tones out of it.

I think that question was asked when this thread was started.

I can't help but wonder if SD marketing doesn't love this controversy over the JB. It is, after all, their number #1 selling pickup. :scratchch

Let's not distract from all the metal core models that came out to deal with a niche market when there is a best selling model that's been the standard for over 30 years.

Why not?

I find the topic interesting and this thread has a lot of great info in it.

Looks like some of you have been looking for a BJ rather than a JB...

Look if it sounds the same, then considerate as the same and stop with all the BJ (yes BJ, not JB) voodoo logic.

Larry...read more and talk less. They do NOT sound the same which is where this whole thing started.

Yeah, wasn't you following along? A pickup found in a drawer with other pickups some 10+ years later did not sound like the brand-spanky new one that was built maybe a month before this thread was started, and at least halfway through the 10+ years that other pickup sat in a drawer with other pickups, its magnetic field doing its thang, and the environmental factors of an un-climate-controlled parts drawer having their way with the wax, coils, and magnet.

Basically all the important info was covered on page 1: they've been made according to the same procedure for 30 years, and thus cannot be different in construction and therefore tone. Minor gauss changes, fluctuations in wax flow and penetration/saturation due to environmental exposure, and of course there's the good old fashioned "somebody put the wrong sticker on it".

But instead, some people treat it like Watergate, Iran-Contra, the 9-11 Commission, or Obamacare - there's a top-level conspiracy to keep the sheeple pacified with propaganda and someone looked behind the magic curtain and thought they found evidence of wrongdoing and chicanery.

As a huge fan of the JB, I would want to put trust into the notion that the production model has been the same wind.

But...

At some point in the span of over 35 years, there has to be reasonable consideration given to something as simple as at least one of the suppliers changing. We don't have to get into a discussion on chaos theory or quantum mechanics to accept that there is a strong possibility that the magnet or the bobbins or the wire or the baseplate or some component is different. Maybe even more than one of those.

Maybe it is still within spec or a set of variances. Maybe it's not. I'm not putting a stake in the ground when it comes to that.

It wasn't in a parts drawer with a dozen other pups, it was in a climate controlled room, and it is not wax potted.

Just asking, but did you read the thread. Have you ever used an old JB?

It's a different sounding, behaving, and feeling pup. You can tell SD knows there differences are there as soon as you read about the anniversary model. I never believed the hub-bub until I got the pup and it sounded so different than the JBs I was used to. Then I tore it down and saw the actual differences. The magnet is a big component as we all know, and the significantly lower DC indicates less winds or a different pattern, or maybe insulation.

Just saying...

Re: All JBs are NOT created equal, Why Has SD Insisted They Are? <Old JB Photos>

Some of the early ones and I mean EARLY with the "JB Model" on the back can show up with less resistance, lower inductance, less icepick and with a more relaxed midrange from time to time.

I've seen them, held them and played guitars that they were installed in but have never owned one.

I guess I should have posted this here in the first place. :)

Love the added "honk" and harmonics of the Antiquity versus the production model

35th Anniversary's more relaxed and textured midrange versus the more stiff and tighter production model was also of note.

Made me a fan of each model for what each can bring to the table. It's like Goldilocks with the three bowls of porridge and three different chairs... each one is unique.

I didn't have an old "JB Model" to use with these for the comparison as all of my oldest JBs are mid 80's.

And let's not forget the "Concept JB" set which are the actual recreations of the original prototype.

Sadly, I did read the first post when it was new. I just re-read it. Ok, it wasn't in a parts drawer for 10+ years with other magnets.

"Climate controlled" is as subjective as "good" and "bad". If it wasn't in a vacuum since the day it was made, material degenerates through even the slightest fluctuation in the environment. Barometric pressure, a 1 degree shift in temperature, sunspot activity.

I'm still going with FF's post about people pressing their ears against FRFR monitors straining to hear the difference between 2 gnat farts.
