All mahogany in a Peavey Classic 30 (EL84)

Re: All mahogany in a Peavey Classic 30 (EL84)

Describe your gear better (neck joint, scale length, pup configuration), where you play, do you play with a band, what you don't like about the current pups.
I could have just said CC/PG but this forum is based on intelligent discussion.

Agile 3100 all mahogany / set neck / ebony fret board / stock HH

Present pickups are thin and not vintage enough to my taste. Not enough output yet lots of treble.

Home playing / bedroom levels most of the time

Want a richer fuller sound but with some crunch.

I'm assuming you have the cheap stock PU's now. You need some quality American or European PU's and you'll see a big difference in definition and tone quality.

Vintage PAF PU's are bright if they have A5 magnets (like the '59 & jazz), but warmer with A2's (Seth & PG's). Sounds like you might like a PG set, or a PGB/JazzN. Also another good neck choice is a Phat CatN (they're warm on the neck, but fairly bright in the bridge).

Not looking for the 50s high pitch early rock'n roll/jazzy tone but something more warm and bluesy and be capable of playing some punchy/crunchy led zeppelin or classic rock.

Not at all into new metal, shredding, etc.

Don't know if that makes any sense... Not an easy task at all this pickup shopping thing!

Zep and 50's and 60's rock were played with the same pickups and guitars, the difference came from the amp rigs. If your amp is up to snuff, you can play metal with a tele. In fact, Page used a tele to record with most of the time.

Re: All mahogany in a Peavey Classic 30 (EL84)

Page himself in an interview seemed to say that amplifier had more to do with tone than the guitar itself. Claiming the only big difference with the LP vs. other guitars was the extra sustain. Plus, the man had some magic fingers and a real sense of music and could probably make any guitar sing.

But for the rest of us with less natural abilities and yet who practice hard… We expect little miracles from the hardware lollll

I also read the following:

“From 1956 until sometime in 1961, Gibson used different Alnico magnets in their PAFs, the same ones available for their P-90 pickups. It seems Gibson randomly used Alnico 2, 3, 4 and 5 grade magnets in PAFs until 1961.

Due to human intervention and the wide-tolerance of the winding machines and the test equipment used by Gibson from 1956-1961, PAF pickups during these years usually measure between 7.5 - 9.0 thousand ohms (K ohms)”

*****

The original PAF tone must have varied tremendously from one guitar to the next...

Fact no 1: Page had a 57 LP
Fact no 2: Unless I’m wrong, replacement pickups à la Dimarzio and Duncan only appeared in the early 70s

Therefore Page used stock Gibson pickups in his LP.
