Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

I'm looking for a great, musical Alnico 2 bridge humbucker to pair with a Pearly Gates neck on my Robin Savoy. This guitar is kinda of a cross between a 335 and a Les Paul. It's semihollow but with a solid mahogany body and maple top. It's sounds very open and ringing sounding acoustically.

I have a Custom Custom + Pearly Gates neck combo on a similar guitar, but I want to try another alnico 2 bridge pickup with a bit less output and compression than the Custom Custom but a bit more output than a Pearly Gates bridge. What do you recommend?

Many thanks!!!

Pearly/Custom hybrid, A2 59/custom hybrid, A2 brobucker, 78. Maybe a dimarzio virtual hot paf if you can find one.

Unless you want to swap magnets, it's either an APH-1B or an APH-2B from the list of standard production pickups. I'd probably go with the APH-2B.

Here are my two votes:

'78 Model

Screamin' Demon w/ A2

Ask MJ for a BG (Billy Gibbons) Pearly Gates Bridge Humbucker.

I'm not familiar with that guitar so what you say doesn't seem to make sense...

"a cross between a 335 and a Les Paul. It's semihollow but with a solid mahogany body and maple top"?

It's semi-hollow but a solid mahogany body!! What the heck are you talking about?!

Re: Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

the only thing in the normal production line thats between those two is the aph2b

Re: Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

It's built like a Les Paul (one piece mahogany back + maple top) but it has the dimensions and f holes of a 335.

A more affordable alternative to the Customshop Pearly Gates bridge might be to find a used Pearly Gates Plus and drop an A2 mag into it.

I'd second the recommendation for an A2 powered 59/Custom Hybrid too though. Demon with an A2 was another good possibility.

I almost hesitate to suggest it but GFS makes an 11K A2 pickup called the VEH that's good sounding. Nice match for a bright guitar- it's warm & rich but it has a little coil offset and it isn't dark or wooly sounding. At $35 it's another inexpensive option.

My personal choice out of these four would be the A2 Hybrid, I think.

Brobucker is stellar in a bright guitar. Nice vintagey feel with its standard degaussed A5; I don't think you'd need to swap it out for an A2.

So, are you saying that it is a chambered 335 as opposed to a semi-hollow 335?

I think he might mean a solid maple top rather than plywood like all the ESs. I don't know anything about Robins. I think when they first came out, they used to come loaded with Rio Grande pickups.

Re: Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

i love the seth but it has less output than the pearly

I guess APH-1B vs PGB is a good example of higher DCR != hotter. Either that or the website is off (again). Thanks for the correction, Jeremy.

So, what did you decide to buy ?

I don't know yet. I'm thinking since I'm gonna see Maricela at namm better ask her directly. If not, I'm thinking of wizz pafs. I know these are alnico 4 and not 2, but I played a lester with wizz and the tone was to die for. They may not be exactly what I need for that guitar, but always wanted to try those; maybe 'tis the time.

Re: Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

fro the price of the wizz, you can have mj make you exactly what you want in the custom shop. not that i havent thought about getting a dark burst set myself. and swapping the magnet to a2 :D

Yup. I'll see MJ at namm next month so I'll ask her. That's my first choice the most logical option for this guitar. It's just that I just came across those wizz's on a friend's guitar and got that inner thing that says, "I wanna have that thing too." Thanks for the info. Cheers!

Re: Alnico 2 bridge pup (in between Pearly Gates & Custom Custom)

Ask MJ for a BG (Billy Gibbons) Pearly Gates Bridge Humbucker.

This.

The CSPGb from the Custom Shop has a little more output and has slightly less edge to the treble than the stock version.

I prefer it.

But I prefer the stock PGn neck pickup.

So if you have a stock PGn the two would sound great together...at least to me.
