Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

Re: Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

Well, my father is a semi-professional painter, with mostly everything. Spray painting, Airbrushing, normal brushing etc, but I'm still not sure what kind of paint is OK for guitars. I actually think if i end up doing the Hondo too, I'll be doing some kind of natural finish.

Use acrylic lacquer. i have had some pro results with that. Once you get it back to wood you can paint it with a sanding sdealer to fill the pores in the wood. Sand and recoat that a few time prior to starting the spraying. Your dad will know the rest.

Alright. And actually our neighbor is a completely professional car body painter, so we can probably get some help/paint from him too.

man you will make a great guitar out of this with the help from some pros. The finish is a huge part of a guitar build. Make sure the headstock is matched to the body.

What colour were you thinking?

Re: Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

Thanks so much for all your help, Kramersteen! I'm thinking a really dark purple maybe? I might get something airbrushed on it or something, maybe like... I don't even know.. But i really want the base color to be some kind of dark purple. Have any ideas?

If it was mine i would go for something bright. maybe a yellow could look cool.

Alright, I know you said bright color would look cool, but I just can't stop thinking about dark purple.. And our neighbor has a beautiful dark purple with a pearl effect, do you think that would work?

Oh man.... If I can find some of that, or if he has some.... :headbang:

Re: Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

Here... even cheaper but it depends on the color http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Basecoat-12-Ounce-House-Kolor/dp/B003TQT8AK.

But this is if you want to throw in whole hog with the project to get these colors to come out right you need a well sealed and primered body with a good base coat and a good clear coat on top of it... But when doing projects like this if always approached it with the attitude of... If your gonna be a bear... be a grizzly.

Re: Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

That looks awesome! Thanks! I'm still gonna wait and see exactly what the purple+pearl effect look like together, but if my neighbor will paint with one of these, that would be great!

And as for my last post about price, I myself don't know much about paint so I was thinking about normal indoor house paint that costs like 25$ a gallon. After looking up automotive paint that price doesn't look so insane.

Yeah comparatively auto paint is really expensive and the house of kolor stuff is towards the more expensive end of things... but by the same token many dont realize how little you actually use.. but its still expensive by the time you get done buying primers and clear coats

I will say this though... I love candies and pearls but t hey are much much harder to shoot and get to look really good. Particularly if you go with a lighter candy. I did a car in a color once if i remember right was PPG Nuclear yellow chrome, I started with the hood and wound up painting it twice because i realized that my primer underneath was way too dark for it and was making it a darker almost light caramel color instead of a irradiated urine color I was after. But go slow and shoot many thin coats

Re: Alright, can someone put a list together for me?

@Kramersteen Yeah I think I might..... He offered to paint it and clear coat it with the thick clear coat when he gets the time.

Well, I hope it goes well the first time then. :D

Thanks to both of you for all your help!!!!!

Yeah if he has offered then just go with the colour he suggested. Pearls look good on guitars and i can see that working on that body. Good luck.
