Alright, I have to ask...

Re: Alright, I have to ask...

Depends on what guitar it's in and what I'm after.

Yup.

I do know there are certain models and makes I can go to and get a consistently good sound with them. though. Those would include:

Duncan JB - I got back and forth with this pickup but I can't deny it's a good go-to rock tone.
Duncan Quarter-Pounders - specifically the single coils and bass pickups. Killer and punchy.
DiMarzio FRED - I alwasy got great usable tones out of this pickup.
DiMarzio Air Norton - probably my favorite neck humbucker.
DiMarzio Crunch Lab - amazing sounding pickup, even if it is a tad too hot for some applications.
EMG 85 and 60A - haven't gotten a bad sound with these yet!

Re: Alright, I have to ask...

Bridge: the JB in a mahogany axe. It's a bright pup so the mahogany gives it some major balls. VERY good for just about anything. GREAT all round pickup, except maybe for jazz. Rock, pop, punk, thrash, lower tunings, it's MENTAL how versatile it is.

Neck: Air Norton in pretty much anything. Singing vocal like lead tone, sustain for days, and Petrucci's lead tone is my favourite neck lead tone ever hahah

Mind you, this changes from time to time . . .

In a humbucker: the PATB-3 Blues Saraceno. Almost perfectly balanced frequency response, with great note articulation.

In a single: the Jerry Donahue bridge pup in my Tele. Perfect Tele tone without the ice-picky treble. But still good treble.

Re: Alright, I have to ask...

The 59 in a Strat. Does blues, classic rock, and even 80s metal beautifully. Doesn't matter what amp either, always sounds great.

The *cough*Super Distortion*cough* is catching up though.

Re: Alright, I have to ask...

Gibson P90 dogear in a Les Paul, Jr., because they sound the best.

Favorite humbucker? S.D. Antiquity Firebird.

Alright, I have to ask...

JB.

Why? Is the first pickup I ever bought and it's been what my tone has been based on for close to 30 years, which makes it the benchmark for any other pickup I try. I'd wager that most feel the same about the first pickup they bought and tuned their ears to.
