we were discussing this last night and after watching several clips on the web on both guitars, felt that the tele deluxe is more bang for your buck. it's got the features he wants, and a bolt on neck, which he was looking for. its 50 dollars less than the jim adkins, and comes with the deluxe gig bag, which came with my jaguar. the thing is basically a soft case.

ps- i voted jim adkins by mistake.

thoughts?

I voted Jim Adkins model because that's what I would get. I like the set neck option and would prefer the P-90s to those humbuckers. Solid vs. semi-hollow? Negligible in this case. Tele headstock vs. shark fin? I like the tele headstock here. I like mahogany/rosewood over all maple necks. $50 price difference doesn't really negate one over the other. I can go either way on the bridge design, but the tune-o-matic would imply a steeper neck angle...might have something to do with sustain. I'd have to play both to find out. Overall, the JA Tele just looks better to me. These are just my preferences, though. Your friend sounds like he already made up his mind. I hope he enjoys the hell out of it.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

I voted for the Deluxe... by accident. I agree with Sanford, for most of the same reasons.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

I agree on the Deluxe-

AND if he doesn;t love the WRs, he can go to Rio Grande, they make some of their buckers in a WR "size"

The other one is just "wrong", lol. You wouldn't put a vintage 3 saddle on a SG would ya? ;)

He should get what he wants obviously, but he will have alot more options down the road with the deluxe- wants a bigger/smaller/wider/narrower/flatter/rounder neck? he's screwed with the set neck version. And he will have more options in pickups- he can buy a different pickguard from one of the custom cutters and put in some P90s OR Buckers, OR minis, or, or, or....

Jim Adkins Tele. That thing is sexxxxay.

No, because a three saddle tele bridge doesn't intonate worth a sh!t and generally the sound of it is pretty dull, IMHO of course.

If he's into tinkering with guitars then a Squire Affinity or Xaviere or SX would work, too. Why spend the cash on either of these if future modifications are going to come into play?

It sounds like the guy made up his mind from Youtube videos, which means what he really wants is the amplifiers/recording gear that they used to make the vids. The look of the deluxe appeals to him, but he should go and play a few in a store before deciding.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

They both look awesome as Hell. Can he play them both first? They're so close in price; don't let $50 be the tie breaker.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Can I suggest the middle point? A '72 Thinline. Eff me that's a sexy ass gat.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

cant play em. local stockist has none.

edit: and im friends with everyone at that store! so its not like he's getting the snicklefritz.

being the dude in Puerto Rico with the tom delonge strat (stock SD!) and Jaguar HH in chrome makes ya stand out. lol

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

he's used to more humbucking tones, i took that into account when i recommended the tele deluxe. i know the custom p 90 is hot, but its not a humbucker.

what convinced him, i think, was a youtube video of the tele deluxe duplicating some of his favorite sounds, with nothing but a boss ds-2

No, because a three saddle tele bridge doesn't intonate worth a sh!t and generally the sound of it is pretty dull, IMHO of course.

I keep hearing about this intonation prob with those saddles- my CV50s with brass uncompensated saddles has no intonation problems I can find/hear- in tune all over the neck. Its no worse than my RPS Starla with a TOM (IOW- it's on the money)

As for "dull", meh..different strokes I guess. I couldn;t figure out for the longest time why none of the Teles I played sounded like a old Tele should, until I played several with vintage bridges with brass saddles. But if people are more inclined to the sound of a strat, than I can see why they would like the modern tele style bridges.

as for mods- if he's ordering sight unseen, he may not be 100% happy out of the box- he at least has some recourse with the Deluxe- he has little to none with the P90 version

You a Jim Adkins fan or something ? You obviously have great issue with my post

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

From a pure tone point of view...Semi-hollow's and P90's are both tone generators in a big way. I think that would be a sweet axe! Buckers on solid ash? That is a crap shoot. Might be awesome...might not. I have not taken to that tone when I tried one of those. May have been a dud...I dunno. :scratchch

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

it's tied!

I would like to add: i will probably buy whichever axe he says no to. this isnt to influence voting, since id have either one.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Do you really want a guitar with some other players name on it? what if Jim Adkins does a Ben Rothlinsburger in a couple of months?

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

I say, let the person spending the money decide.

thats just it: he likes both, but obviously he cant buy both.

What he needs is a Les Paul studio. I'm telling you guys: he's going to buy a Gibby and put away his fender. hes into the gibson sound, and he doesnt know it.

ive been gravitating towards the neck position of my telecaster lately. it adds a different dimension to the riffs, im loving single coil tones.
