  • Alnico 5 tele hot bridge with a brass plate.
  • APS-2 strat bridg wound to 10K
  • Stratele

  • Jazz Bass Bridge, MJ's specs (something hot, for punk rock)
  • JB Humbucker pickup on two separate strat bobbins.
  • Custom Custom (A2 magnet) ... I would like it to be a 4-wire bridge model and have BOTH bobbins with adjustable pole pieces ... black - definitely WITH logo, and trem-spaced
  • Jazz Model Bridge to 9.5k Al 5 4 cond Adj Bobbind 4.5k Non Adj 5.k
  • Overwound JB coils Ceramic Magnet ( like Duncan Distortion)Under a nickel cover

Well I got a staggered Jazz (4.4 and 4.8) wound up to about 9.3k and a potted 4-conductor Seth that came to about 8.7k (4.2 and 4.4).

I tried them in the neck of my guitar.

Jazz was okay. Combined w/ the CUstom bridge I got some icepick highs, and I would have liked a bit more bass. I've thought about selling this one up. (here Jolly Jolly......)

Meow......I thought that overwound Jazz was a bridge model? I can't remember if it was covered, zebra, black, or whatever. Gime a holler about it.:)

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

THAT'S IT! I'm buying a winding machine! :yell: :laugh2:

Next, I want a black overwound Seth 4 lead Trembucker!

Then, a tapped Tele lead with bassplate!

After that, a calibrated Twangbanger strat SET! :laugh2: :laugh2: :32:

I used to own a TB-55, it was my first custom shop pickup.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

wow some crazy stuff goin' on there in that list...i see one odd thing though...no rails (SC size or full hum size) of any sort unless i missed it...that's odd.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I think I might redo the tape on my pickup, since it's a little uneven on one side.

Sure Bones that would be bad mojo dude

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

JB Humbucker pickup on two separate strat bobbins.

for this Charvel Fusion Special. I was offically the last one to get it wound. God Bless MJ. She keep asking what I wanted and I had to reprint the pic from the avatar.
JumpMarine, youngpup, and I think Bones waited for me. we were all late to the jam because of it. But I want to record a before and after of it.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I think it's an interesting list. In addition to no rails, I had the only P90 in the bunch. Considering how damn good the SD p90s are, I am just really suprised!

I'm suprised that no one wanted MJ's creation ....

Hey buddy, I think the baseplate your Classic Stack might need potted to prevent those microphonics. Keep it from touching any other metal, possibly with masking tape, and wax it. Is the ground wire still on it?

I used to have the same problem with my Tele bridge pickups. I would either cut a piece of rubber from an old bike inner tubeand put that between the plate and pickup, or silicone the plate to the pickup.

The JD that I have installed now never squeeled. I think the plate was wax potted onto the pickup.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I got a Distortion/Custom Hybrid, with a large ceramic mag, I meant to try and sweet talk an A2 mag out of MJ, especially since Cathy said she was an easy mark! :laugh2: It's also got the vintage wood spacers, to make it a truly bast*rd pup. MJ must have wound the coils a little hotter because I still ended up with a DC Resistance of 16.88. It also had 46 gauss. I'm guess that's 46 from the way Evan talked on the tour?

I'm awaiting the guitar to stick it in.

46 gauss refers to the strength of the magnet. And it means you have one mutha of a magnet in there.

Like the one Wile E. Coyote had that pulled in washers/dryers, trucks, trains, satellites and Saturn 5 rockets into the cave with him and blew him up!

Had I been unstupid enough to catch on to sending in specs ahead of time, it would have been one of the following:

1) Underwound Phat Cat n (7.0k with a tap at 6.5k). I already have one MJ rewound for me at 7.0k and it is a KILLER sweet neck pu in my LP Std. I would use this second one as a middle pickup for a 3 pu LP Custom RI to get truly "clucky" tones from the bridge/middle and neck/middle combos. (Not to make it sound like a Strat but just Strat-LIKE, e.g., cluck-tones with Les Paul woof.) Then all I would need is the 3pu LP Custom to go with it...

2) Overwound Phat Cat b (11.5k with taps at 10.5k and 9.5k). See which overwind I like best and go from there on my next custom order.

3) Overwound Seth Lover at 10.5k, zebra with both coils adjustable. (I would put an Alnico 3 magnet in it when I got it home if I thought the Alnico 2 was still a little thin.) It would also be mismatched with a 4.0k coil and a 6.5k coil with a tap at 5.5k to give me a total of 9.5k in case I thought 10.5 was a little much for some applications.

Just a few ideas.

Or maybe a Texas Hot with Alnico 5 rod mags but the coil the same as stock (9.7k is plenty).

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

Ahhh, the Custom UGD Pickups. They were just icing on the cake. The Users Group Day was absolutely unbelievable, Seymore & crew are without a doubt the best! I think that I (we) was (were) a bit extra lucky, my seventeen year old son and I both went and...we both got to make pickups. How cool is that? Together we have 10+ guitars and we decided to put our pickups on one guitar. So colectively we decided on the Pearly Gates, my son built the neck pickup and I built the bridge. The bridge measured at 8.43 and the neck at 7.52. These pickups are everything you have ever read about and more. I was up until 1am last night playing, I couldn't put it down, and I have a full time job, but what is the value of sleep when you have a set of Seymore Duncan Custon Shop Pearly Gates in your guitar?
Anyway, the pickups are very responsive and will deliver whatever you give them. Attack the strings hard and you have grinding drive, play them soft and they will softly wisper. Roll back the volume from 10 to about 8 and they clean up beutifully. The thing I think I like the most about these are that every string is defined, no mud. Double stops and chords are amazing. Pinch harmonics? Like I said, anything you give it comes back very musically. Playing the responsiveness of the pickups is like playing a new instrument all by itself.

Seymore Duncan...the man works magic!

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

# 5/2 SurfBanger With Bottom plate

# Texas Hot with an added baseplate and wound up to 10.5k.

These two should become production models! How do they sound in their respective strats?!;)

Whats the STRA-90? Is that a single coil sized P-90?

this pup received some controversy a while back. it's basically a humbucker with one coil being an actual single coil pup with alnico 5 rods. the other coil is voiced like a p-90 with 2 small ceramic magnets. So basically you have a single coil, a p-90 and a big PAF voiced humbucker in one package.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

MJ started mine (a Little '59) but I was too busy to do it, and I forgot all about it :-)

It's probably still siting there on her little (stuffed) rack thing

I have the 5/2 SurfBanger, but I haven't installed it yet. I was planning to build a new Strat for it, but I might not be able to wait, I may install it in my old one just to hear it. It's tapped, but not wound very hot. I'm afraid that when I install it with neck & mid Surfers, it may not be hot enough to balance out correctly. In that case, it'll head back to MJ for a rewind!
